| Show BUILDING TO GET NEW IMPETUS highway officials make plans in line with presidents Pro program aram by barnea W Brooks Director american highway educational bureau impelled by forces now gett getting ng behind public work of every character and especially under the leadership of president hoover plans aro are in the making for increased activity in road building as one of the most far reach ing and constructive agencies la in national progress in preparation for this ob objective and for the consideration of 0 ther other matters concerning highway imp improvement ro members of the american association of state highway official 5 have just held their regular annual meeting ting at MCC san antonio texas this body Is composed exclusively of highway officials who represent every state in tha the union and who also co operate cooperate closely with the federal government in the nd ministration of federal aid at this meeting meet lne legislative and financial needs in highway work for the immediate future were discussed and a resolution was passed recommending to congress that the federal aid appropriation be increased to 12 federal aid project in carrying on their part of the nations work highway officials are stressing the importance of completing the main federal aid project as originally planned tills this plan it will be recalled was to complete state and interstate routes first in order to save motor vehicle revenues from the drain of excessive repair costs where roads brenot are not built sufficiently strong in the first instance to sustain heavy le As ablo to the wisdom of proceeding edling with increased activity on the original program those in highway leadership assert that they are in line with president hoovers engineering mews on such euch matters these lawa were expressed in one of his hi pre election speeches at st louie and again on his recent visit to cincinnati and louism 3 tille in connection with waterway 1 improvement pro tersely stinted it was the presidents expressed judgment that trunk line waterways should be improved first and highway in their recent conferences nt at san antonio have again attested to the soundness of that principle as a menus of conserving and making the safest safes t possible use of highway construction capital use of Wa highways hway taking the country as a whole the use of public highways s Is increasing at an amazing rate likewise motor vehicle operating waste Is increasing where here highways have hava not yet been brought up tip to modern in construction this altu situation atlon may be taken as a lesson that not only should there be no let up tip in road building especially pec ally lally on routes that are heavily traveled but that public work of this character should be intensified it may be taken also as a reminder that there should be no evasion of the obligation due to motorists who have hae acquiesced in gasoline tax levies in the th various states upon the aso assurance urance that the main traffic channels of the country would be pressed to compte completion tion as early as possible and thus take care of between 75 and 85 per ent cent of the count rya rys before attempting to stretch the federal raid aid principle beyond its present scope with the initiative which president hoover Is taking in all internal improvement pro matters it Is expected that highway building soon will be greatly increased and thereafter maintained nt at a speed peed that will insure no not tonly anly aus sustained employment in that particular field but great profit to the country |
