Show o 0 BECRAFT TO EXPERIMENT WITH INVERTED WEIR IN HYDRAULIC LIC LABORATORY t Mr F. F W. W Becraft who holds a fellowship fellowship fellowship fellow fellow- ship in iii the Mining School this year is undertaking undertaking undertaking un un- to make a long series of experiments experiments ments on the inverted weir in the hydraulic lic laboratory of the University If by using the inverted weir water 7 can can- ill I Ie be e used with the same degree of accuracy that is obtained when water is measured I with the ordinary weir this new type of measurement will be adopted no doubt in inmany inmany 1 many canal systems for the reason that b by this method water can be measured in a canal which has very little fall while by the the ordinary weir method of f measurement a measurement can be taken only where there is a vertical drop of several feet in the c ca ca' canal nal If this new method of measurement is isad ad adopted the tendency will be to keep the canal clean near the weir because this mea measurement will make a slightly greater velocity near the bottom of the canal than would exist otherwise while with the old method the velocity of the water upstream from the weir is necessarily greatly d dd dd- creased and therefore in streams carrying no considerable amount of sediment th the e channel of oT approach is soon filled and th thus the measurement ment is rendered inaccurate and andrt misleading If Mr Becraft succeeds in in rt demonstrating that water can be measured by this thi new v method the work he does will l not ot only be e of great credit to him personal personally ly but i i it will be of great credit to the Uni Uns J Mr lVIr Becraft in his is work in sanita sanitary y en engineering en engineering expects to prepare a large map mapo f Salt Lake City on which he will plot all t th cases of typhoid fever that have occurred during the last two or three years together r with data as to milk and water supply to t to each family In II this way it is expected th that that r rhe he can furnish some valuable information as to the purity of our milk and water sU i ply in Salt Lake and its effect on contag conta contagious ious ions diseases 0 0 |
