Show SACRIFICES WHICH PEOPLE HAVE MADE TO GAIN AN EDUCATION Since learning began many people have mide sacrifices to gain an education Often people make sacrifices for a year or two with ith the thought that in the end their earning earning earning earn earn- ing capacities will be increased I However er s some some me people wish education for the thing itself It is interesting to note the motives which prompt them to study without t the idea of earning more money Some seek education because their surroundings stir interest in certain subjects such as geology medicine and art Some wish it because their daily intercourse with the world at large and with their families sugg suggests that they would get along more peacefully and and happily if they understood certain fundamental fundamental fundamental funda funda- mental rules which govern nature human and nd natural Others have a vague longing for knowledge which defies explanation At the University of Utah are students belonging to each of these three classes In Inthe Inthe the first class is a man of the medical department department department de de- who believes in ip his work and feels that he can be of greater service to mankind if he continues his work as far as possible Belonging to the second class are three men all of whom left good positions so so that they might better their intellect One of them was graduated from the N Normal Normal Nor Nor- ormal or- or mal course several years ago has had a splendid position in the schools ever since but has returned to take out his A. A B. B de de- gree Another was superintendent of the public schools in one of the counties who in order to enjoy the life of a stu stu- dent The third was interested in a large farming proposition He le knew that it was somewhat disastrous financially for him to neglect this yet he felt that his relation to hs his family would be much deepened if he knew more mote about the things concerning life Therefore he came to the university and was particularly interested in psychology ogy and English Not on one one of these men wished ed education cation to better themselves in a financial way but in a personal way They made sacrifices not only themselves but perhaps perhaps perhaps per per- haps asked also their families to make them In the third class is a girl who lived in a little town of Idaho and not content to cook and sew until some man should marry her came to the University against again t ther her parents' parents wishes For three years she has worked after school ool to make enough to support herself giving up all the little luxuries luxuries ries and delights of home even her parents' parents good will in order to learn to study what she wished to study and become of some benefit to herself and others It is such people as these that give us us faith in the goodness of advanced education and who make us exclaim The higher the education the better |
