Show u 0 PERSONAL OPINION J The Value of Frate Fraternities There seems to be a rather general sentiment sentiment senti senti- ment in this community at least that fraternity life ife is not conducive to the best college spirit or citizenship that it fosters a partisan rather than the broad democratic spirit which which is essential essential essen essen- for th the best service to ones one's fellows That such may be the result of fraternity life I do not question and yet I believe it to be rather a fault in the mental attitude of the members than in the fraternity idea itself No matter in what phase of life we may look we find the necessity of workIng working work work- Ing through local organization in order to accomplish accomplish accomplish a great purpose If we would be loyal to our national government we must begin by being loyal to the government of our city If we desire to teach humanity moral ideals the proper place to begin is in the church in our own neighborhood If we wish to uphold the principles of a national political party we must do so by upholding the local political organization We can never serve the larger cause except through the smaller Just so we cannot serve our college except through the organizations which make up the life of that college The fault in many of our fraternities as aswell aswell we well l as in our political and religious organizations organizations organizations is that they are made an end rather than a means to a larger end If members could be m made de deto to look upon such organizations as a means through which they might serve their schools and their country rather than as an end for which all else must be sacrificed then thenn the value of such organizations as fraternities in in promoting the best college spirit and citizenship could not be ques ques- o |
