Show OJ si l THE KEYNOTE Near the end of the last school year the editor of the Chronicle turned the paper over to the respective college classes for four issues During that period certain articles articles articles ar ar- appeared in the Chronicle which created created created cre cre- a great deal of unfavorable comment Its It was generally believed that these articles articles articles ar ar- tended to injure the standing standing- of the University in the state at large At different different different differ differ- ent times during the year student report report- ers ers erg printed matter in the city papers that verged upon falsehood and was injurious to members of the University community concerned concerned concerned con con- therein Because of these occurrences a meeting of the student body was called at the ven very end of the school year stringent resolutions were adopted condemning such journalistic efforts and a committee composed of two mel members bers of the Faculty and three students was appointed to draft a code by which student editors and reporters might guide themselves in the future The intention was not to make compulsory rules but advisory advisory advisory ad ad- ones After deliberating on this matter the committee has arrived at this conclusion That it would be impossible to draw up and codify a number of rules to which everyone everyone everyone ev ev- could agree A specific proposition may appeal to each person in a different light There are many members of the University community who do not believe personal eccentricities and idiosyncrasies are proper subjects for the joke or cartoon There are many other people equally well meaning who feel that such joking and cartooning is perfectly legitimate fun To attempt to lay down a hard and fast rule on such a proposition as this would undoubtedly undoubted undoubted- ly result in much friction the rule would ultimately be broken and the final result would be a disrespect for all rules The committee decided therefore to submit to the student body and student journalists one broad principle by which to guide their publication It is Be guided by your loyalty loyalty loyalty loy loy- alty to the best interests of the University do nothing that you feel would injure rather promote the welfare of the school If such were the guiding principle of our student writers they would scrutinize all they printed with careful eye lest they printed untruths or injurious statements With such an idea in mind no student would write articles deliberately insulting members of the Faculty Such a principle ought to keep the keenest seeker of fun from publishing slurs in the name of humor humor humor hu hu- mor calculated to satisfy spite spate by injuring injuring injuring ing the person at whom the joke was aimed But to make such a principle effective every member of the student body should become imbu imbued d with the idea that he or she is personally for the enforcement enforcement enforcement enforce enforce- ment of that principle We vVe must create an atmosphere in the University that will jealously jealously jealously jeal jeal- guard the welfare of the school and compel every student writer to walk a carefully carefully carefully care care- fully chosen path It lt remains for the student student student stu stu- dent body to decide whether or not this idea can be realized The Chronicle this year proposes to adopt the above named principle as its guide A prominent member of the student body has advised us to make it our pur pur- pose pose to boost t to knock as little as possible to be positive in all that we print rather than negative negative- The advice is undoubtedly good To us it is the same as the principle just discussed put in different words We shall endeavor this year to put our shoulder shoulder shoulder der to the wheel and give a good strong lift to every worthy enterprise in the University University University Uni Uni- remembering the while that condemnation condemnation condemnation con con- of evil is as much boosting as the fulsome praise of the commonplace If in the course of carrying out such a policy as we have outlined we sometimes seem to urge overmuch we ask your kind consideration With full knowledge of our own weakness we ask the hearty cooperation cooperation cooperation opera co tion of the student body in making the Chronicle improve as the year progresses r o- |
