Show i Braithwait Gallery schedules metals, paintings exhibit Dixie College. He returned to California in 1976 and currently resides with his family in Van Nuys. He has been pursuing furthei studies at California State University, Long Beach, and California State University, Northridge. In addition, he has been teaching courses in design and ceramics at Los Angeles Valley College. Mr. Riggs' works have been exhibited widely and are in many public and private collections. Mr. Riggs stated, "Art, to me, is a way of life. It is a search and growth, a thought process, a syn thesizing and interpretation of all my experiences in life. Art is a journey; a continuous con-tinuous development of skills and ideas. An artist must be a pioneer and push hack the boundaries. He must contribute something unique to that which has gone before." Kric Brown was born in Logan, Utah and subsequently sub-sequently moved to Cedar City where he went through the public schools. He received a HA degree in Art at Southern Utah State College in iy?4. He completed com-pleted his MFA degree in 1977 at Drake University, Pes Moines, Iowa. While in Dos Moines he taught painting in the Des Moines Independent School District. He and his wife, LuAnne Judd Brown, currently reside in Cedar City. The artist has been recipient of several awards and has been represented in many exhibitions. Twice, he was voted the outstanding student in art at SUSC, He was awarded the Mary L. Bastow art scholarship and graduated with high honors at Southern Utah State College. Mr. Brown was represented in Drake University's J. C. Penney Annual Student Show, 197(1 and 1977. He was recipient of a scholarship from the Drake University College of Fine Arts. The artist was represented in New Directions in Drawing and Painting, a national exhibition held in St. Louis, Missouri, 1976. His paintings are in public and private collections. Mr. Brown stated that, "Essential to the essence of modern art, or modern anything, is the idea that we must forever be either increasing in-creasing the dose or changing the poison; which remains contrary to the essence of what is and always has been art." He continued,". . , repetition of past solutions, whether personal or historical, tend to maime art and leave only craftsmanship." The Riggs-Brown joint exhibition is diverse and creditable--a good beginning for the new exhibition year at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, Prof. Leek said. Gallery hours are weekdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The public is especially invited to attend this and subsequent exhibtions throughout the year. Y ( fkkrM E22aaW-. lL3Jb- - 1 ART SHOW. One of the two featured artists in the present Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery showing is Carl E. Riggs, who works in fine metal sculpture. Small metals by Carl E. Riggs, Jr., of Van Nuys, California; and recent paintings by Eric Brown, of Cedar City, will be presented September 8 through October Oc-tober 1 in the Briathwaite Fine Arts Gallery, Southern Utah State College, Cedar' City. Mr. Riggs will show 29 metal objects including cast and hand-chased rings, neckpieces, brooches, pendants and earrings in silver, copper, enamel and other materials. Mr. Brown will show 20 recent paintings and drawings, including acrylic, charcoal, pencil and mixed media. The works in the joint exhibition are available for purchase according to Prof. Thomas A. Leek, gallery curator. The public is invited to attend a reception and meet the artists at the exhibition's opening, Thursday, September Sep-tember 8, 7-9 p.m. in the Braithwaite Gallery. Light refreshments will be served. Carl E. Riggs, Jr., was Born in Honaker, Virginia. His family moved to the San Fernando Valley in Southern California where the artist attended the public schools. He graduated from Los Angeles Valley College with an A. A. degree in 1968. There he was awarded toe Morris Field art scholarship. scholar-ship. He continued his education at Brigham Young University and earned a B. A. degree in Art in 1970. He continued his studies toward an M.F.A. degree at BYU. He was recipient of many awards at the University, including a graduate internship in-ternship and graduate student assistantship. He served as an assistant to the BYU Art Gallery director and taught ceramics at the University.
