Show National Guard prepares forSummerCamp The 30 officers and 470 enlisted men, members of the 2nd Battalion, 222nd Field Artillery Unit of the Utah National Guard, will leave Sunday, June 5 for Ft. Lewis, Washington and their annual two-week training. Col. James M. Miller, commander of the southern Utah unit, indicated that units from Cedar City, St. George, Beaver and Fillmore will be transported tran-sported to Ft. Lewis via four large C130 transport planes from the Cedar City airport at approximately 11 a.m. Sunday morning. Boarding procedures will get underway un-derway at approximately 9:30 a.m. Salt Lake Departure Members of the unit from Richfield and Manti will depart from Salt Lake International for the two weeks of training. While at Ft. Lewis the guard unit will be training with their affiliate unit, the Ninth Division, station at Ft. Lewis, and will be training and testing on that unit's 155 Self-propelled howitzers. While at Ft. Lewis the Utah Guard unit will participate in an Army Readiness Training Evaluation Program (ARTEP). National Guard Unit The 2nd Battalion, 222nd Field Artillery Ar-tillery is a southern Utah based unit of the Utah National Guard. Various battery units are located at different eommunitiers within the southern Utah area. Col. Miller explains. Headquarters and Headquarters Battery is located in Cedar City. It is comprised of 13 officers (including the battalion staff) and 100 enlisted men. The batter is commanded by Captain John M. Esplin. Service battery is located at Beaver. Firing batteries, are identified as Able, Baker and Charlie, (A, B and C.) Able Battery is located in Richfield, Baker Battery is located at St. George. Charlie Battery is located at Manti. A detachment is located at Fillmore and it is assigned as a part of Charlie Battery from Manti. Normally the unit trains at Camp Williams in northern Utah. "This year's training program at Ft. Lewis provides a diversified training program, on new and different terrain. It is an experience that we have been looking forward to and planning for all through the past year," Col. Miller stated. |
