U In this State under present conditions conditions conditions condi condi- it is no great ambition to attend attend attend at- at tend the University Why Because Be Be- cause the cause the idea of a high school is closely connected with this I tion A half dozen young preparatory preparatory f tory students probably with f I t L 1 H sl y cates from the eighth grade are seen on the street corner They boast that they are University students How misleading this is to the pub pub- lic There is a wrong impression prevalent as to what a University student is The majority of students in this State think they can get almost the same training in a local high school or an academy as they can here and then later I will attend some university in the East Before this institution can maintain maintain maintain main main- tain the dignity of a university it must rid itself of this reproach There are enough high schools and academies in the State to feed one university if that one oli one university would lift its head up and declare itself such We have just as well equipped and just as well manned departments in this school now as asare asare asare are in better known institutions This statement is attested by students students students stu stu- dents now studying outside of the State Are there any reasons why the University of Utah should not take its place along with Stanford Michigan Michigan Mich Mich- igan or Chicago The first great barrier to this is the present system of having all the preparatory and college students live and study to to- to gether Separate them and you will mark the difference there would soon be in spirit in work in everything everything everything every every- thing pertaining to school life The sole ambition of the preparatory students students students stu stu- dents would be to get into the Col Col- lege In the College itself one would see such life and spirit and ambition as can only grow under similar circumstances The graduates ates of the other schools of the State would feel honored to gain L f j the distinction of attending not the Preparatory school but the University University University Uni Uni- o of f Utah Utah there there would belittle belittle be belittle little need of going East We now have many efficient professors we would soon have more for the best l educators of of the the land cater to the better institutions t t Mr Holmes or whoever thel the F l physical instructor might be would f have no trouble in getting all themen the themen men he desired to put the first football football football foot foot- ball team of the State into the field The team would continually be re recruited recruited recruited re- re from the Preparatory school No organization proposing proposing proposing propos propos- ing to build up the institution would be left supported supported- we would have indeed a University Regents faculty alumni students students students stu stu- dents in the name of all that is sacred sacred sacred sa sa- cred to your hearts why can not these conditions be brought about Those who are in a position to act let them act They will receive the unbounded support of the patrons of the school and the whole state The CHRONICLE appeals to the College students to take the first step in this important movement the greatest epoch in the history of this institution Organize a College College College Col lege Student Body Now is the time for action college students if you love your Alma Mater Act act persistently and you shall be proud of the results |
