It was this point in the game where the pattern changed and the game was put on ice for the T-Birds. The Raiders fumbled the kickoff following the TD on their own 3 yard line and on the next play Clodfelter had his third score of the game and the T-Birds T-Birds ha jumped out to a 34 to 20 margin. Another Raider drive was snapped on a pass interception intercept-ion by Jim Mineau and for all intent and purposes the game was over. Before the final gun sounded, however, the T-Birds had turned that interception into a TD with Jim Easley romping six yards on a quarterback keeper, then Griffiths scored a two point PAT to wind up the tally for the game. score came on a Andy Gawaldo Gawal-do aerial to Rick Bales. The I PAT was booted t0 put the T- i Birds back out in front 14-8. Again the Raiders took the' kickoff after the SUSC tally: and generated a 86 yard drive to score a TD of their' own then failed on the PAT, attempt to knot the score at 14 all. The Raider score was a three yard run by Bob Selph capping the 86 yard drive. Big gainer in the series was a 37 yard scamper by Steve Stonehouse. SUSC's Tom Martin returned return-ed the Raider kickoff back to the Raider 21, a 78 yard return re-turn and the T-Birds moved to the three yard line where they lost possession on a fumble. fum-ble. In the Third period the T-Birds T-Birds were first to hit pay dirt, again coming after a Raider fumble on their own 39. It was Clodfelter who broke loose and showed some good open field running for the score on the second play from scrimmage. But the Raiders, true to their pattern of the game, took the kickoff and marched 73 yards for a score with Stonehouse hitting over the middle from the two for the score. In the period the T-Birds converted on the PAT, the Raiders missed on a pass attempt at-tempt and the score stood at 21-20. As the fourth quarter opened open-ed the T-Birds were midway on a 78 yard scoring drive and eight plays into the period had another score with Reese Griffiths carrying in from the Three touchdowns in the final period of play turned what appeared to be a down to the wire contest into a runaway run-away for the Southern Utah State College Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon as they opened up play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) with a 42-20 victory over Fort Lewis Raiders. The teams were knotted at 14-all at half, time and at the three-quarter mark Coach Tom Kingsford's T-Birds held a slim 21-20 edge. Steve Clodfelter, running back for the Thunderbirds set a new school record in the contest with 201 net yards rushing in the conference opener op-ener for the two clubs. Satis-tically Satis-tically the T-Birds won the battle, but not as impressively impressive-ly as the final score would indicate. SUS hit for paydirt taking advantage of a Raider fumble late in the first quarter of play. The Raiders lost control on their own 33 and after a pass attempt failed, Clodfelter broke through the line and picked his way 33 yards for the score then booted the extra ex-tra point for a 7-0 lead. The Raiders were not to be denied, however, they took the kick off following the T-Bird tally and marched 62 yards to score early in the second period. The score came on a nine yard John Chisholm to Dee Tennison pass. The Raiders Raid-ers went for two on the extra point try with George Kelley scoring giving the visitors from Durango, Colo, a brief 8-7 advantage. Midway in the period the T-Birds put together their longest drive of the game as they marched 80 yards for a score that was helped by a 15-yard face mask penalty against the Raiders.
