Game ended in 6-6 deadlock. i Statistics favor Redmen in Homecoming game, but Hurricane Tigers gain 6-6 tie down, the Tiger's net yardage gain, both passing and rushing rush-ing was a minus 11 yards. But after 48 minutes of play the scoreboard still read Cedar 6, Hurricane 6. That's the deloma of Coach Jim Marshall of the Cedar I High School Redmen football team after a disappointing homecoming battle against the Hurricane Tigers. 1 The game left the two clubs hopelessly in the Cellar of the I Region Eight football race in I the Class A division, with I identical records of three loss-I loss-I es and a tie. j Forget the score and look at j the statistics. Cedar had a total net rushing yardage . j gain of 198 in the game. Hur- ricane had 15. Passing yard-: yard-: age was about equal with J the Redmen netting 56 yards, the Tigers 52. In first downs I the Redmen at 18, the Tigers had 7. As a matter of fact additional addition-al statistics show that in the second quarter when Hurricane Hurri-cane scored its only touch ball as they moved on a ser ies of plays to the Cedar 24. A fumble stopped that series and the Redmen took the ball on the recovery on their own 20, marched 80 yards in 14 plays and were first to score on the first play of the second sec-ond quarter. n "The score' came oh a sweep around the right end with Lewis Chamberlain carrying. Alan Averett plunged for the extra point and was stopped short to give the Redmen a 6 - 0 load. Midway in the period after Hurrricane had punted, the Redmen on their own 26 tried a pass in the flat and it was grabbed off by an alert Vance Covington who ran untouched for pav dirt to knot the score at 6-ail. The teams left the field at haftime tied but in the second sec-ond period Hurricane had never nev-er penetrated beyond the Redman Red-man 45 yard line, offensively. In the third period the Red-men Red-men again dominated action. They drove in one series to the 24 only to be stopped on downs and they had begun a drive on the Tiger's 46 to the 21 when the period opened. The drive was kept alive in the fourth period with the Redmen marching down to the Tiger 5 where they had a third and four situation for a first down. A sweep lost four yards back to the nine and a pass in the flat netted only one yard, allowing the Tigers to take over. Twice the Redmen regained possession only to lose the ball on fumbles, once on their own 48 and once on the Tiger Ti-ger 25, that with just 1:57 left in the game. The Redmen defense held, forcing a punt and they had their final chance to break the tie. A pass interference penalty moved the ball to midfield, and Bill Ronnow hit Nolan Roberts for 34 yards to the Tiger's 11. A face mask penalty moved the ball to the six. The final play of the game got off with one second on the clock with fullback Mike Rice plunging over the middle a nd the effort was one yard short of the goal line and a victory. Cedar High School will be in league play this week. Scheduled to meet will be Millard at Hurricane and Dixie Dix-ie at Delta. On Wednesday, Oct. 7, updated to avoid a conflict con-flict with the annual Utah Education Association, the Redmen will travel to Fillmore to meet the Eagles. Hurricane will be at Dixie and Delta will take the league bye. |
