Show j J j. j i t r 44 Op i n on I Editor Chronicle Dear Sir SirI I 1 I have been in the University sit three ee years and nd ha have e been a constant reader of the k school paper It has interested me meto meto to notice the various styles of material material ma ma- that have during that time filled the columns of the periodical During this time I have heard many severe criticisms of the Chronicle Chron icle icle most of which I will admi were by persons in no way supporting supporting sup- sup porting the paper But from these these- numerous numerous comi comments comments com com- i ments I have gleaned an idea which 3 I beg to submit for approval It is isN N this That as far as possible tl the e literary articles articles' be on western life l and western college life r- r If we want merely entertaining stories we can find volumes of them in our library and each can select i those of peculiar interest to him YVe We may argue that there is an ans s interest in the work of the students that more than balances that of the S- S stories from more experienced writers writ writ- ers And further that there must be a literary department in the college college college col col- lege paper that should represent the work of the students Then if we sho should have a literary literary literary liter liter- ary department why should we we westerners not find the topics of greatest interest in things characteristic characteristic characteristic char char- of th the west We must all admit that the stories stories stories stor stor- ies ies of the west are very interest interest- f when written Bos Bos- ing even by a tonian Then if the spirit of your paper paper paper pa pa- per were to this style of literature it seems to to me that there would be two valuable ad ad- vantages I It t would help to create an interest in this style by the students and besides what stories stories' might be of true I literary value it would cause the staff to treat such subjects and possibly possibly possibly pos pos- 1 sibly mean that if they follow literary literary literary liter liter- ary lines lines' they might be the champions champions cham ham of the literature of our intermountain intermountain intermountain inter- inter mountain region SCHOOL I hold that the students in any should be the University govern governing governing ing ng factor in that institution We vVe are proud of our state government government gov gov- which is by the people people people peo peo- and for the people Every Americans American's breast is filled with satisfaction when he is made to realize that he is a governing factor in this great republic of ours In the same way that the American citizen is made to carry carry carry car car- ry responsibility I feel the student student student stu stu- dent should be made to feel that the welfare of the school depends Pi 1 partly at least upon him as a student I IThen Then too the student is in touch with his fellow v students r f and for this reason wrongs ii could be be gotten at and righted f I much more effectively and with t less loss of time t- t But But- you ask how could a thing 4 be possible I will call your at attention attention attention at- at to a system of school government government government gov gov- which came under my observation The student body represented every registered student and each member was wap considered a aa aa a citizen of the school city Once each year a school city election election election elec elec- tion was held and a mayor re recorder recorder recorder re- re corder attorney justice of the peace and city council were elect elect- ed The councilmen were chosen two from each class that is two from the Seniors two from the Juniors two from the Sophomores Sophomores Sophomores mores and two from the Fresh Fresh- men The mayor appointed the chief of police who in in turn selected selected se se- the police force Laws and 1 ordinances were enacted by the council prescribing the duties of the officers and citizens and pu pun pun- for those found guilty of breaking the la laws s and ordinances ordinances ordinances ordin ordin- ances of the school city Now y if a student was caught doing anything central contrary y to the law he was was arrested and brought before before before be be- fore the justice to al answer the charge made against him li liThe The system was so perfect that even an instructor had no right to reprimand he had but one way of reaching unruly students and that was through the school ci city ty court In that school students were not found flirting in the halls hall from morning till night loitering in hall was against the law N Neither either were students found cheating in classes for to give or receive help in an examination examination examination examina examina- tion was a misdemeanor The Th student who stole and was caught and nd all thieves who were caught never attempted attempt d to steal the second time J J.
