Show r i DEBATING I J 1 v. v The old saying that nothing but athletic sports took favorably at a university niver ity has been thoroughly thorough thorough- I ly disqualified this year at the University Jn i n the line of debating Never before has has th e been such sucha a spirit of enthusiasm showed towards this form of scholarship At the first call for class ants this year all the college classes responded with a hitherto t unheard-of unheard enthusiasm At the freshmen try-out try twelve men L participated eight were in the ther r sophomore and a proportionate number in each of the upper r classes The result of this school support support support sup sup- port and enthusiasm was thoroughly thoroughly thor thor- L. L manifested manifest d on Wednesday I i evening December 5 at the preliminary preliminary pre pre- debate for representatives tives for the team to go against th the Boulder tes at B Boulder ulder the fk middle of January The representation representation would be a credit to any western state university The speakers were pared off each taking taking taking tak tak- ing one side of the question for debate with Boulder The affirmative affirmative affirm affirm- r speakers speakers' were given twelve minutes to speak and three minutes minutes minutes min min- utes for rebuttal for reb rebuttal while the negar negatives negatives nega nega- r tives were given fifteen minutes On account of the short rt time in which they had to deliver their debates they were unable to do more than touch the principal points under consideration N Nevertheless Nevertheless Nev Nev- ev- ev all were exceedingly in in- and more so from the fact that no two spoke from the same point of view or advanced the same argument The teams were Marion l Eardley and Frank Holman Carlson and A. A Huntsman Anderson and G. W. W Brown and and- J. J H. H Stockman Ernest Bramwell and Percy Goddard Throughout the negative side of the question had the better of the argument and at no time was it possible for the affirmative man manto manto manto to satisfactorily answer the poorest poorest poorest poor poor- est negative man Holman the first affirmative speaker was in inthe inthe inthe the game as usual with his characteristic characteristic characteristic char char- coolness and ready re re- Although his debate was not the most flowery of the evening evening evening even even- ing still his delivery and excellent excellent excellent excel excel- lent phrasing characterized him himas as a man of no mean ability and andin andin andin in whom Utah has a prize Bramwell Bramwell Bramwell Bram Bram- well and Goddard spoke very well bo both h deliveries being well given and the only thing which detracted from their debate and which was also characteristic of all the other debaters was the use of notes While this may be allowable and in some instances necessary still from the fact that notes were used some of f the attention attention attention at at- of the audience was given to the personality of the speaker which otherwise would have been given to his address and on the whole made it more effective ry f In the argument the affirmative attempted to to show that the Cubans Cubans Cu Cu- bans were incapable of self gov that government to them meant nothing but the offices offices offices of of- it offered all of which were swallowed up up by those in power that if given another election they would still fight over authority authority author author- ity and that by annexation the United States would break no no- no pledges she had made to the Cubans Cubans Cui Cu Cu- i bans and the world at large The negative however held P that if the Cubans were annexed to the United States it would mean that they had equal fellowship fellowship fellowship fellow fellow- ship with all citizens of the United Unit Unit- ed States and that on account of f their condition they were not not desirable as such that by annexation annexation annexation annex annex- the one million dollar tariff 1 which is paid annually by the thea a Tobacco trust would go back into the coffers of the trust thus giving giving giving ing them a firmer hold and lastly lastly last last- i ly Iy that if annexed it would be at atthe atthe the cost of breaking all the sacred sacred sacred sa sa- cred pledges made by this government government government gov gov- to the Cubans and the theo thet o t world at large t The judges of the debate were t O. O W. W Powers J. J L. L Rawlins and l. l Professors Bennion Reynolds and Merrill I The team selected to represent Utah was composed of Frank E. E Holman Ernest Bramwell and Percy Goddard with G. G W. W Brown as alternate With this team and the fact that Utah has the negative side of the question i r which is undoubtedly the best side Utah has the best chance in inthe in inthe the schools school's history to win from another college on their home grounds Much J credit is due and should be given to the other debaters who only lost from the fact that they were pitted against older and more experienced men r |
