Show Parowan Sailor Takes Part in Vietnamese Assault USS PRINCETON (LPH-5) (FHTNC)May 25 Interior Communications Electrician 3 C Almon Day Orton, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Hills Orton of Parowan, took part in the amphibious assault of the "demilitarized "de-militarized zone (DMZ) which divides North and South Vietnam, Viet-nam, while serving aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Princeton. The search and destroy mis- sion named "Operation Hickory", Hick-ory", was a multi-unit offensive offen-sive into the "DMZ" just south of the Ben Hai River. His ship helped to put a special landing force of U. S. Marines, complete with tanks, weapons and ammunition into the area. The Marines were landed by small boats, as well as by helicopters. While "Hickory" was under way pilots from U. S. Aircraft carrier in the South China Sea, and the Gulf of Tonkin flew air strikes over the area, and attacked targets as indicated by the ground forces ashore. |
