U of U. U within the last few years but the fracas on last Monday was perhaps the most violent outburst that h has s ever occurred The w whole hole affair makes an ting newspaper story THE BANNER IS HUNG OUT Early Monday morning morning- a number of fellows from the engineering school hung out from the roof of the arts aits building over the front entrance enhance a large banner b bearing aring the words New Home of the Engineers The suggestion sugg-estion of such an escapade came in the fact that since the burning of the physical building a few weeks ago the engineers have been having having having hav hav- ing some recitations temporarily in the arts building THE TIlE BANNER IS TORN DOWN A little after nine o'clock the sophomore sophomore sophomore more engineers while in mathematics f back into the att attic c Johnson fell right into the clutches of the w whole hole sophomore class What shall wedo we wedo do with him Kill Kill him him 1 was the quick response of a hot hot headed headed engineer who began pounding Johnson in the back While three of the fellows were trying to throw their prisoner the others climbed out on the roof loof in search of their sacred banner Meanwhile Johnson jei jerked ked about bout like a mad man remained on his feet and finally escaped and fled fied ATTIC GUARDED ALL FORENOON After some seal searching searching- ching the banner was found But upon a message sent by President Kingsbury to tor r postpone th the until the noon hour the banner r i i S X was not to be hung out until 1 During all the remainder of the forenoon forenoon fore fore- a large pocket knife Turn on the water The big crowd of eds co-eds at a distance uttered intermittent exclamations of fright as the seething mass of the struggling increased in size Turn on the water Slash the crowd s separated d in the in-the th the middle some one had cut the l hose hosein se in half Turn on the water down there th there there- r t THE STRA I FAILS But the he water would not turn At least when it was turned most ost of it went into the hallway instead of the hose because because be be- cause of some soine disarrangement at the r recent recent re re- cent fire of the physical building It had been the intention to give the crowd of of- engineers outside a cold bath then drive back the engineers from the roof with the same treatment and thereupon tear tear ter the banner down with a long pole and a hook The fellows to tear it down were three young who were hiding on top of the in front of the en en- trance But an engineer had swung down upon them from a neighboring window opened the window opposite and let a bunch of engineers climb up in spite of the several arts students guarding below This gave the engineers complete complete complete com com- control of the situation Upon failing with the basement ho hose e the arts art students got the fire hose from a aupper an upper floor and rushed down upon the strategic points But again there were shouts of Turn on the water And again the water failed to c come me at the bid bid- ding The guard of engineers in the attic had turned off the water at the eq equalizing pressure tanks j jAN J AN AMUSING INCONGRUITY happened in connection with the first fire 1 hose During the tug of war the engineers engineers en en- ene on the end of the hose outside the building were trying to pull the hose back in while their comrades inside were trying trying trying try try- ing to pull the hose outside And Ard a vice arts ts the a versa division also existed among and normal students toward the en end d 0 of f fand the tugging match MATCH l GENERAL GENERAL ROUGH AND TUMBLE Then followed a a. a general rough I 1 an and d the arts and nor normal normal nor nor- tu tumble ble match in which m mal l st students dents endeavored to regain control 4 of the top of the balustrade beneath the the banner This strategic point was now held by half a dozen engineers after their their having ousted the three young nor nor- mals and the approach to this which r was through windows from the stair way stair way t landing landino- b midway between the second and third floor was guarded by a crew of en en- The aim of the arts a and d nor nor- mals was to climb out through these windows windows windows win win- dows while that of the engineers was to toi i prevent this by throwing their opponents down the stair It is perhaps difficult difficult difficult cult to tell just w what hat the outcome would have been if the engineers on the balustrade balustrade balus- balus trade had not skinned the knuckles and beat the heads of their opponents with clubs when an effort was made to to climb up a window NARROW ESCAPE FOR THE JANITOR i Boysh ye dees in die commanded commanded commanded com- com Janitor in angry excitement excitement excitement ex ex- as he rushed into the seething mob No one seemed to notice him and the crowd quickly but unconsciously jostled him into one corner where he heI I was held prisoner prisoner for some time He now began to realize what kind of a mix- mix up he had fallen into as now and then isome isom some fellow was flung against him by the centrifugal force of the mob At last he was thankful to be able make a dash for liberty through a momentary gap MOVEMENTS l OF F BATTLE REGISTERED BY BYTHE BYTHE THE SCREAMS SCREAMS- OF OF CO The eds co-eds of f the institution were were were-gath- gath gathered th- th ered as spectators above and below the scene of battle A spontaneous expulsion of half suppressed breath came from every pi pretty etty mouth each time some fellow fellow fel fel- low low was beaten on the scalp or received a blow on the knuckles All would hold Bold their breaths in expectant horror honor as so some e centre of struggle moved close to the e v 4 edge of the stairs And a general scream of terror shrieked on the air as as some some arts rt or normal student was vas was torn from the crowd and flung down the steps taking with him as he would from one one to three engineers and all landing below in w whatever whatever what what- hat hat- ever position a fickle chance would have it ENGINEERS ARE VICTORIOUS Soon the engin engineers ers largely outnumbered outnumbered outnumbered their opponents who one by one were flung down the st stairs irs Seeing however that no head headway way could be made against the clubs and the swarming in Some time after the afternoon recitations were in session the noisy crowd dispersed upon a kindly re reminder reminder reminder re- re minder of the President l r i MORAL VICTORY FOR ARTS AND NOR NOR- during the contest when the student told the President that the arts art's students would not let the banner remain on the building and that they would d tear it down before morning Fearing that serious trouble might ensue the Pr President President si- si dent ordered the janitor to remove remove the flag soon after half past one oclo o'clock k r SOME AFTERMATHS AFTERMATH Late in the afternoon th the ja janitor t r. r unlocked unlocked un un- 11 locked one of the upper rooms rooms and to his surprise released three eds co-eds who had been locked in ever since before the fracas the ladder adder was torn away and other slight damages What shall we do about it Be chival- chival enough to pay for every bit of it i exclaimed another in response and surely surely surely sure sure- ly the engineers will insist on their paying i for one Most assuredly was the unanimous sentiment At the same time the engineers were holding a formal meeting at which at-which which they voted unanimously to pay for one half the damages WHAT THE PROFESSORS THOUGHT OF F IT Jove this reminds me of olden days e exclaimed one of the instructors with as a s smile i ile on his face and his his
