Show Wishes Come True for Utah 4-H'ers The perennial wlah of Utah 411 Club members state honors and a trip to the National 411 Club Congren In Chicago cams true this year tor four teen-agers whose 1958 records of perform ance were superior in the national 4 H Food Preparation, Safety, and Health programs. Jennie Smith, 18, of Milford bat become an expert in preparing prepar-ing nutritious, appetizing meals. Participation in the 411 Food Preparation program has taught her how to select, plan, and scire a wide variety of dishes. Aa state winner, the Kclvinator Division, American Motors, pro-vldcs pro-vldcs her all-expense trip to Chicago. A club member for nine years, Jennie baked pies, cakes, rolls and cookies, baking powder biscuits, bis-cuits, and made fancy sandwiches. sand-wiches. A cooking leader two Jennie Smith projects, gave 575 demonstrations, demonstra-tions, and waa a member of the 411 Club's safety committee ' every year. This year she led two clubs and Mrs. Isabel! To be selected for the top state award in the 411 Health program is not only an honor, but it distinguishes tbo individual individ-ual as one who has developed exemplary personal health habits. hab-its. This distinction Is even more meaningful to Evon Olsen, 18, of loR.Ha Hla years, she entered a cherry pie contest and won a blue ribbon. Jennie gave four demonstrations, demonstra-tions, winning two blue ribbons and a trip to the state fair. She also won a bond In a meal preparation pre-paration contest. Her mother, Mrs. Mabel Smith, is the local 4 H leader. Safety first, last and always Is the motto of LoRetta Hales, of Spanish Fork. By participating in the national 4-H Safety program, pro-gram, this 18 year old girl assumes as-sumes a responsibility to make the farm, community and the nation a safer place in which to work and play. Having won blue awarda and medals in local, county and state contests, LoRetta waa instigator in the forming of a 4-H Safety Council. This group urged safe bicycle habits, and showed safety Alms at several grade schools. LoRetta exhibited four safety W Mm Evon Oli.it Ephraim, 4-H Club member for nine years. A polio victim at the age of three, she developed and strengthened her afflicted muscles mus-cles through exercise, roller skating and bicycling. In those early difficult years. Evon was discouraged and unhappy. Her recovery was slow. Then her sister sis-ter started to talk about 4-H, and aoon Evon found a new Interest In-terest and a new hope. Her mental men-tal and physical state improved markedly. Graduating from high school as an honor student, Evon won a 1100 scholarship to Utah State Agriculture College on an essay "The Way I Learn jd My Lesson through 4-H." Mrs. Nets Olsin Is her local leader. All these programs are conducted con-ducted under the direction of the Cooperative Extension Service. |
