Board Advisor We wish to pay tribute to the memory of our faithful committee chairman, Wilson Lunt, who was called by death before his term of office expired and before he had the opportunity to make his report. We feel the loss of one of Cedar City's most enthusiastic and energetic leaders. Until just days before his passing he exhibited the most enthusiasm and faith in the growth and progress of his beloved be-loved city and southern Utah area. We shall miss his spirit, his wit, and ability to make the best better. The committee compiled and had published a 30-page booklet entitled "WHAT TO DO, WHAT TO SEE. in ana near Cedar" at the cost of $629.00 for 10,000 copies. This is for distribution to the traveling public to encourage activity activi-ty and tourism in our southern Utah area. The Committee has worked with the Southern Utah Travel Association in advertising the area by means of the Indian Summer Days promotion, designed to extend the tourist business later into the fall of the year. Merchants declare this to be a successful and profitable venture. Media Me-dia of advertising used were: television, radio and newspapers. newspa-pers. We assisted with the publication and distribution of the popular brochure advertising Indian Summer Days in the southern Utah area, and advertising was also placed with the Desert Magazine, Sunset, Thiokol Weekly, Kenne-scope Kenne-scope and the Sperry Rand newspaper. Plans are also in the making for a spring-time promotion to encourage travel tra-vel in our area during the early spring months and thus expand or tourist season. The Southern Utah Travel Association also plans the publication of a full color brochure (100,000 copies) to be used in connection with the major airlines, the distribution of which is to be world-wide. The Committee is cooperating w.'th the Southern Utah Travel Association in the production of a color movie mov-ie of the area, which will take two years to complete at the cost of approximately $10,000. This film is to advertise the color and grandeur of the southern Utah areas. The committee is working with the College of Southern South-ern Utah drama department in the development of an annual an-nual Shakespearean Festival under the stars to be held' during the summer months. j This Committee advanced the sum of $100.00 to the Junior Chamber of Commerce for a display and advertisement advertise-ment at the National Jaycee convention in Atlanta, Ga. C. The purpose of the exhibit was to show the importance of our city and area to the C.A.A. for the granting of additional airline service between Salt Lake City, Cedar City, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Copies of this 15-page exhibit were sent to all interested in-terested parties throughout the United States. President Hansen presented this exhibit before the federal examiners examin-ers in Denver, Colorado. Preliminary approval has been received and final approval is expected shortly, giving us this airline service in time for the forth-coming tourist season. The Airport Committee has made. several studies of the conditions at the airport and has made recommendations recommenda-tions for improvement to the city. Most of our suggestions were immediately taken care of and some are still in the process. D. College of Southern Utah Committee D. W. Corry. Chairman Dixie Leavitt Board Advisor I would like to report for the committee that during the past year we have made great strides toward fulfillment fulfill-ment of our objective of a secondary education program at C. S. U. The forepart of the year, members of our committee met in Salt Lake City with members of the Utah State Legislature from our area. We also held a meeting with Dr. Daryl Chase, president of Utah State University. In this meeting we outlined to him, again, our feelings regarding' the need for this program irr the southern part of the state and pointed out our determination to reach this goal of secondary education for C. S. U. We returned from this meeting feeling as though we had the support of President Chase in regard to our request re-quest May 29, 1961, a letter was written to Dr. Chase requesting re-questing a meeting with him at Commencement time here ; in Cedar City. We pointed out to him that we were happy , to hear of the accreditation of C. S. U. being granted bv :MCATE. We also indicated that we felt as though this should pave the way for our future development. We also pointed out that in view of the opinions expressed at our meeting with him in Salt Lake City that it was expected that a statement be made by him while he was here for Commencement as to the progress being made in our request re-quest for the additional program. Commencement night, just prior to the exercises, a special U.S.U. Board of Trustees meeting was held. At this meeting a request was acted upon by the Trustees with a recommendation that the secondary education program be encouraged, that studies to Implement the setting up of the program be undertaken, and that plans be made for a complete Liberal Arts program to get under way as soon as feasible. Our committee met the next morning at the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees and thanked them for the action which they had taken the night before. They advised us at that time that the proposal was something that would have to be studied before we could proceed, by the Co-ordinating Council on Higher Education. A committee of two members. Dean Neuberger and Dr. Roy-den Roy-den C. Braithwaite, was appointed to prepare the text of our request, which was to be presented to the Co-ordinating Council on Higher Education. Much time and study has gone Into this particular document and it is now ready to go before the Co-ordinating Council at their next meeting. It is then expected that this proposal will be acted upon by the Board of Trustees at their February meeting. We of the committee are very hopeful of receiving the green light to proceed with this program before the C, S. U. Commencement 1962. E. Congressional Committee A. W. Stephenson. Board Advisor On recommendation of this committee executives of the Chamber of Commerce met with legislators during their session at the State Capitol with regard to expansion of a four year course at College of Southern Utah and reappointments re-appointments on state committees. F. Convention Committee Jack Redford. Chairman ' Robert C Hansen, Eoard Advisor Owing to the closing of Hotel El Escalante and the lack of additional accommodations this committee has been inaCwe for the past year. However, with one new motel constructed and another to be constructed in early spring, and through the additional facilities at the new Student Center at College of Southern Utah we will be able to accommodate larger conventions than have been held In Cedar City in the past We look for this committee to become reactivated and once again make Cedar City the convention center of southern Utah. |
