Show Pony Leaguers Win Invitational Tourney at St. George Collar City Tony Li-ague AH-Star AH-Star ti-ani walked olf with championship honors Monday niyht in a throe tram double elimination tournament held at St. (Jeoruo. The Cedar City crew defeated Hurrcane 13 to 0 with Wayne Ks-plin Ks-plin throwing a no hit shutout in the championship game. Cedar Ce-dar City, however, had to win the event the hard way after losing los-ing the opening game Thursday to Hurricane by a score of 4 to 2. The tournament opened Thursday Thurs-day evening at St. George with Hurricane taking advantage of four errors to score the 4 to 2 victory. That forced Cedar City into a double header Thursday meeting St. George in the second game. Cedar City won that contest 5 to 4 with a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning. The winning tally, Ross Miller, who had been hit by a pitched ball, was scored following a dropped third strike aganist Wayne Es-plin Es-plin and a wild throw to first base. Ksplin was the winning pitcher in the game and Kevin Hunter carried the offensive punch with a three run homer, a double and a sigle in the contest. Friday evening in the first of two games Kevin Howley threw a 2 hitter at St. George to eliminate elimi-nate them from the tournament competition as Cedar City won over St. George by a score of 4 to 1. Cedar scored in the first inning in-ning when Linford Nelson walked walk-ed and Esplin tripled. In the fourth frame walks were f.iven up to Rowley and Robert hulet and both came on to score on a double by Steve Rollo. The final run scored in the seventh when Rollo walked and scored on an infield out. Two hits produced a single run for St. George in the sixth inning. in-ning. The victory placed Cedar City against Hurricane in the nighi cap and they defeated Hurricanr 9 to 1 to force the championship game Monday night. Cedar scored scor-ed two in the first to lead at the end of one, 2 to 1. Hurricane took the lead l.i the third with three runs on a single hit, but a big fifth inning put the game on ice for Cedar. They scored six runs on four hits, including a double by Kevin Rowley, to take the lead. Bernell Thorley was credited credit-ed with the victory on the mound, allowing five hits over the seven Innings of play. In Monday's championship game Cedar City took an early lead with two tallies in the first inning. Rowley walked and scored scor-ed on a triple by Esplin and Esplin Es-plin came on to score on a double by Thorley. Cedar scored in every inning of play to rack up the one sided victory. Esplin, in addition to throwing a no-hitter, including 14 strikeouts, had a perfect evening at the plate with two triples, a double and single to his credit. Triples were also hit Dy crea Mclviuiiin and Cuuimej Wood. Only five of the Hurricane players got on base, two on errors er-rors and three via the walk route. At the conclusion of the tournament tour-nament Monday Wayne Esplin of Cedar City was named the tournament's "Most Valuable riaycr." |
