Show NORMAL DEPARTMENT The Training School THE Normal Department of the U Uni University University Uni- Uni ni has had a training school connected connected connected con with it for several years and much excellent work has been done in preparing young teachers for the great and noble service in which they are today engaged This has been done too in a training school in which only the chart class and the first two grades were represented The need of a larger school with increased facilities for observation and practice work has long been felt At last through the courtesy of the Board of Education of oi Salt Lake City it has has- been made possible to meet the de demands demands de- de mands for such a school In placing the Fremont School with witha ith itha a picked corps of teachers at the disposal disposal disposal dis dis- of the Normal College the aforesaid aforesaid aforesaid afore afore- said Board of Education has made an experiment the result of it is hoped they may view with satisfaction and pride It is sure to prove one of the wisest and best acts of the present minded generous-minded but cautious administration tion of the city schools The Fremont has eight regular classrooms classrooms classrooms class class- rooms and eight rooms recitation-rooms making making mak mak- ing it possible to teach sixteen groups groups- of children during each period of the the- practice hour This means of course that sixteen pupil teachers are practicing practicing ing at the same time The school is supplied with the same material apparatus and conveniences that other public schools receive from the Board besides which the University furnishes whatever else is needed tomake to make the training work a success The practice work of the lower grades from the chart class to the third grade inclusive inclusive inclusive sive is under the direct supervision of Miss Emma Kees teacher of methods in the University The practice houri hour hour- 4 i li i- i J for this section is from 1 30 to 2 30 in inthe inthe inthe the afternoon This hour is divided into three regular recitation periods with a short intermission for physical culture Besides the subjects ordinarily taught in the lower grades the children are treated to some delightful work in elemen elementary ary science with field lessons l simple experiments etc to arouse and keep their attention Clay modelling as asa asa asa a means of expression is also a feature of the work t At present there are about forty young ladies and gentlemen taking training in ina inthis a this section each one of whom whon is supposed supposed sup sup- C posed to give about sixteen lessons a month The training work of the upper grades is under the direction of Prof Stewart b The practice hour from 2 30 to 3 30 is divided into two regular recitation periods with a short interim for physical cal relaxation Each teacher pupil-teacher in this department prepares eight lessons a month most of which are given twice first to one one oe group t and then to another of the same class x There are more than forty young teachers taking training in this section most of whom are happy in their work and doing well r The subjects of study in this section r are E r 1 Literature with its correlations and its forms of expression in oral and written written written writ writ- ten language illustrative drawing g etc The subject of course includes history 2 Science or Nature work with its correlations and its forms of expression in oral and written language drawing drawing drawing draw draw- ing etc 3 Geography with its correlations and its forms of expression in oral and written language illustrative drawing map drawing chalk and sand modelling modelling modelling model model- ling etc rt TY 4 4 Number made up largely of problems lems naturally arising from the proper study of the first three subjects i r oll l i With these four groups of subjects are taught taught all the branches usually 1 found in In a course of study besides some things not often found there It is a practical application of the theory of correlation or concentration as applied to teaching by such eminent men in the profession as Colonel Parker Charles D. D Garmo and Charles and Will William am McMurry It is the new education education education edu edu- cation based upon the psychology of Herbart The work of the whole school conforming to this great principle of teaching is under the general superintendence superintendence superintendence of Prof W Wm m. m M. M Stewart Principal of the Normal School The Principal of the training school is Mr J. J E. E McKnight Following are the names of the regular grade teachers Misses Lilian Hamlin Eva S. A Craft and Mr Horace Cummings Miss Craft has special charge of the nature work and if what has already been done is an earne earnest earnet t of what may maybe maybe maybe be done the school is fortunate in this choice In their relations to the teachers teachers-in- training the grade teachers are both model and critic teachers Their selection selection selection tion was made with special reference to these two functions It is evident too to those in charge of the school that no mistake has been made in this important important important tant matter In their work at th the training school the teachers practice-teachers follow plans carefully thought out and written by themselves showing what they wish to develop and how they intend to do it in every lesson to be given These plans must be submitted to the critic teacher for criticism rewritten rewritten rewritten re re- written if necessary and finally approved approved approved ap ap- proved before they can be used in teaching Some of the plans presented are very creditable indeed and the CHRONICLE will have the pleasure occasionally occasionally occasionally occa occa- of printing some of the best f |
