Show Natural History SINCE gINCE last year Dr Whiting has been appointed Professor of Natural His His- tory By the employment of ot Prof Whiteley and additional ins instructors Prof Whiting ting is now able to devote all his time to his department which includes j zoology botany and physiology Advanced Advanced Advanced Ad- Ad 1 j work is being done in all these 1 j branches and the courses in botany and i t zoology are so varied from year to year that a student can do at least three in each of these subjects Elementary Elementary Elementary Ele Ele- courses in physiology botany and zoology are required of all students and besides these there are classes in inthe inthe inthe the physiology and anatomy of the special senses and the nervous system advanced human physiology advanced zoology systematic zoology and structural structural structural tural botany The University Museum and th the Deseret Museum are open to the students students students stu stu- dents and afford opportunity for systematic systematic systematic matic work in natural history The biological laboratory is small but is well provided with compound microscopes microscopes microscopes micro micro- scopes and accessories and laboratory work is required of all students doing advanced work In this way the student learns to become not a mere follower but an original investigator Instead of being confined to the text-book text and field observation he is tI trained in the use of the microscope and in the careful manipulation manipulation manipulation man man- of instruments so that when he leaves college he will be able to continue continue continue con con- his studies successfully Perhaps a majority of the students when they leave the University engage in teaching in various parts of U Utah Cah With a knowledge knowledge knowledge knowl knowl- edge of how to study and do original work they they will be able to make great advancement themselves and add much to our present knowledge of the fauna and flora of the Great Basin Utah is in great need of specialists i in entomology and other branches of natural history that horticulturists and j farmers may be properly instructed how 1 to treat the various insects that are l causing them so much trouble In the past the public have been inclined to tomake tomake tomake tor r make fun of the II hunter bug but the II hunter bug will not always be the II bug bearer in the community The time has Arrived arrived when he will be made welcome in the orchard and will be counted worthy of a share of its products products products pro pro- ducts if he will only solve the problem of how to kill the tIle bugs The most urgent need of the Natural History Department is a large labo laboratory laboratory labora labora- atory a- a tory for elementary students At present present present pres pres- ent most of their work is necessarily book work and this is no more satisfactory satisfactory satisfactory satis satis- factory in zoology than it is in chemistry chemistry chemistry chem chem- physics or mineralogy It seems that there is no room which can be obtained obtained obtained ob ob- for this purpose they are all used for for- something else It is prophesied that statehood will bring many good things On the supposition that it will the CHRONICLE in behalf of the students students students stu stu- dents solicits some of them for the providing and furnishing of a more extensive extensive ex ex- biological laboratory |
