Show 1 The Legislators' Legislators Visit Wednesday last the State Senate as asa asa asa a body and some ome of the State Representatives Representatives ves visited the University During During During Dur Dur- ing the hour between nine and ten a.m. a.m. a.m. a. a m. m they inspected the main building and were shown how economically it was utilized so as to furnish accommodations accommodations accommodations for the large attendance They saw several of the classes at work and expressed themselves as being pleased with their o observations t U Under nd r the guidance of Professor Kingsbury they then viewed the vario various s departments of the Laboratory building after which Professor Stewart took them in charge and escorted them to the Training School where they spent something over an hour In this department they witnessed the skillful tea teaching hing of the critic teachers and saw the good results in the work of the well-trained well little folks The visit impressed upon our lawmakers lawmakers lawmakers law law- makers the fact that the University and the Normal School are not merely schools of theory but in every way thoroughly practical Science taught in inthe inthe inthe the room class-room is put into practice in inthe inthe inthe the laboratories and the pedagogical theories taught in the other department are applied in in the teaching of children at the Training School One senator was was' heard To to remark that no matter how poor the State is the University and Normal school must be provided for also that the highest economy would he be expressed in the appropriation of ample means to provide provide pro pro- v vide de for the needs of those institutions If the State were to provide suitable facilities for the highest professional training of its teachers there would be beno beno beno no need of importing them Tens of thousands of dollars would thus be saved to ro the State besides the advantage which would come from the education of its citizens We have every reason to believe believe believe be be- lieve that wisdom will dictate the prest pres- pres t i J j i i 1 f ent le legislature slat re in its appropriations for forE forthe f the University E One very interesting feature to the visitors was the remarkable aptness manifested by the third grade at training training train train- ing school when in reply to questions on specific gravity the little ones showed their powers to solve problems on the subject so puzzling to older ones The legislators were astonished The rapid writing with perfect ease was also almost marvelous to the observers In this same grade the children re read d a science lesson on The liThe Flame which was very interesting to the Senators In the second grade the answers to questions on the life of Washington showed the little ones to be embryo his embryo his Miss Hamlin critic teacher of the beginners grade delighted the guests with physical culture exercises singing and reading by little tots just six years old No one connected with the University ty knew just when the visit of the legislature legisla legisla- ture would occur Wednesday was a most unfavorable day for a visit so there was certainly no II show made We hope the representatives in the Q lower house will call upon us also |
