by President Talmage at the Normal public meeting Thursday evening evening evening even even- ing Dec 12 was a very able and indeed interesting one During the whole time the audience were held enraptured by th the flow of eloquence Following are some of the notable sayings It has been said that the spirit of earnest enquiry the enquiry the scientific spirit as we term it promises it-promises ill effects on human development for or being cold calculating discerning judging its devotee being cautious in the extreme even skeptical at times he has no room in his soul for trusting all abiding faith in other words that the scientific spirit being as has just been shown in pleasing and healthful health health- ful contrast with the poetic impulse the former is opposed to faith The inference inference inference infer infer- ence from such a statement is plain that he who makes it classes faith as a poetic function as an emanation of the theart theart theart art spirit As if faith in God were wen were mere emotion its sole purpose to please as asif asif asif if it had its foundation in the sweet yet emotional of poesy Faith has a deeper seat a firmer anchorage Likening it to a tree its roots penetrate to the profoundest recesses of the soul so the scientific spirit is the fruit of that tree No one sees more clearly than does the scientist the necessity of trusting reli reli- ances on powers beyond his comprehension sion none recognizes more readily than he the existence of laws whose meaning he cannot fathom Faith is not blind indolent submission passive obedience with no effort toward thought or reason The scientific spirit walks hand in hand with the spirit of true religion But the scientist resents any effort to present man-made man rules under the name of Natures Nature's lures lure's laws There are fundan funda- funda n c r AJ ya sh br if mental differences between en rules and laws JK The scientific spirit delights to give honor where it is ib due its possessor freely acknowledges the aid he has received received received re re- from oth others rs The man who comes into position and immediately sets about demolishing the work of his predecessors or if this cannot be dene who hides it or disguises it that it might appear as his own has none none of the scientific spirit which is the spirit of manhood and of honor Shame is due him who speaks slightingly of those who pioneered the way and laboriously ly made the path along which he travels with comparative ease II The happy possessor of the scientific spirit pursues his course with cautious sincerity inviting inspection welcoming criticism at every step He leaves as plain a pathway as he can make and should the trail lead over barren rocks he hews his footprints footprint in the stone that others may the more readily follow and test his results The unscientific worker covers covers' his track that none may come to 10 test the correctness of his conclusions The man upon whom the scientific spirit rests welcomes every new worker in the field for every piece of independent ent work will diminish the chances of error going undetected in his own The impulse toward competition is strong strong- within him but he has no place for a feeling of selfish rivalry Competition is severe even fierce to-day to the scientific scientific scientific spirit while not diminishing its strength would make it friendly and ennobling |
