| Show The State of Utah THIS new year has brought the greatest event that ever happened in the history of Utah since the arrival of the pioneers For forty eight t years past the inhabitants of the valleys of the great basin h have ve kept the day of July as one of rejoicing and thanksgiving Now the o of January is made memorable memorable memorable able by the entering of this commonwealth commonwealth commonwealth common common- wealth on its career as a sovereign state in the tJ Union nion Those students that attended the inaugural exercises in the tabernacle and every student of the University University Uni Uni- should have been there must have been deeply im impressed pressed with the importance of the occasion The address by Governor Wells was wasa a clear lear outline of the political history of the territory and a fair forecast of the future possibilities of the new born State State The youth of today cannot fully realize the hi bitterness of the struggles through which the people of Utah ha have e passed and can therefore hardly appreciate the boon of a peaceful settlement settlement settlement settle settle- ment of all t the the difficulties of the past and a harmonious entrance to all the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship citizenship citizenship citizen citizen- ship in the U United States of America We rejoice in being numbe numbered ed among the states of this great nation no not because a territorial form of government is hard to tp bear but because we can now now exercise all the rights of citizens citizen in a republican form of government government This we could not do while lying in the swaddling clothes of territorial govern govern- ment Statehood offers greater occasions for experience in politics and consequently greater opportunities for the moral and intellectual development of the citizen It may be said that the chances for moral corruption are also greater and this is verily true In contemplating the privileges of a state government we must not be blind to its responsibilities Every civilized community must have havea a sovereign whose duty it is to make and enforce just laws laws laws-a a great responsibility responsibility responsibility indeed In a monarchial form of government this burden is thrown upon the monarch but in a re republic the people are the only sovereign power in inand inand inand and are responsible for the equity or the injustice of the government They and they alone are responsible for the rightness rightness rightness right- right ness of the laws the justice of their administration and the power of their execution In national affairs they are accountable for having waged war or sued for peace In short the honor and andi i integrity of the nation at home and abroad rest entirely with the citizens citizen It It is true that the governing power is vested in the majority and not wholly with the individual citizen but that 4 makes k s it it the more important t that every voter ter does his or her duty in exercising the functions of citizenship Loyalty and patriotism directed by reason and a sense of justice must guide every every act of the citizen In the the heat of of political battle he must never f forget that country is above party and that his opponents are friends and fellow He must be ready at any time to bury party strife and unite with his countrymen for the maintenance ance of justice and liberty If his opponents are elected to office he should not seek to bring them into disrepute but should aid them in the performance of their duties that harmony and good government may prevail Commend every every worthy official no matter what his political faith may be I It t is only the narrow minded and cowardly that refuse to acknowledge the good deeds of their opponents Of all the youth of this land the students of the University of of Utah should be most interested in inthe inthe inthe the welfare of of the new state From among the sons and daughters of this institution of learning will come her foremost citizens her legislators judges governors go and congressmen Already two sons of the University have been een sent ent to Congress and others have been elected to high offices in the state The Governor the President of the Senate and other political leaders are are re University men 2 1 Statehood brings freedom and honor Ft but ut let us not forget that it also brings an equal weight of responsibility J |
