Show J AT T the meeting called by the President President President dent last Friday afternoon t the e in inactivity inactivity inactivity in- in activity and disinterestedness of students in affairs affair tending to the advancement of the he University was mentioned It is not a new subject by any means and anyone doubting the truth of it has butto butto but butto to observe the manner which many of the students assume toward affairs in which they should be most interested Each one is indebted to his fellow- fellow students and should be interested in their we welfare fare Our obligation is not to ourselves alone alon and the student who sees nothing good in that which does not at the very moment appear to his half-blinded half eyes as being beneficial to tor r himself has has' yet much to learn We Wel l ought not think that we are here solely for for- the good that we individually may I obtain to the exclusion ot of ou our f fellow fellow- students but r rather r should we err ag against our own interests t 1 if if the case ever ver became urgent urgen enough nough to demand it i After leaving the University too many of the students seem to forget their Alma mater some even have been known to work against her interests The alumnus takes no more concern for forthe forthe forthe the welfare of the institution that has helped to give him a better knowledge of the world in which he must pass his life Questions of greatest import which may make or mar her future arise are argued often by comparative strangers to the University in the newspapers in political gatherings and andon andon andon on the street j but few of the alumni seem to be aware that the least ripple has come to disturb the placid serenity It Ir leads us to ask where are re the hundreds hundreds hundreds hun hun- of graduates who have left these halls with the fixed determination to exert an influence in the world to battle for the right and oppose Injustice injustice injustice tice wherever found Their senti sentiments merits when they stood with diploma in hand were that they would always gratefully remember the University would protect her were protection needed and advance advance advance ad ad- vance her interests in the community where they might reside How many of them remember their promises so solemnly made so easily broken The Thelast Thelast Thelast last two years have been perhaps the most critical in the history of the Uni Uni- Friends and influence have been needed more and appreciated better during that period than ever before Who shO should ld be found ready to uphold and defend if not her alumni Yet how many a y are there who have made any effort whatever in in her behalf Once around the fingers of one hand will suffice in enumerating them Our alumni are scattered around in the various settlements of the territory and andare andare andare are in a position to feel the pulse as it were of the people They should know above all others what the people want and the position the University should occupy in reference to the people whom it is to educate Ever since the CHRONICLE was established established established it has solicited correspondence from alumni and has never refused to publish any communication so received but as s yet it has not been necessary for forthe forthe forthe the postal service to employ an extra carrier for this district Is it any wonder wonder woner won won- der er then that the University is is not better appreciated among the people of the Territory Our greatest desire is to see such a alove alove alove love for the TJ University among among its students and alumni that even ven even the least attempt to injure it will evoke such a storm of indignation from the people that its will be co compelled to hear and to heed |
