Show r Jaycee Fly Control Program Gets National Recognition The Cedar City Junior Chamber of Commerce Fly Control program of last summer brought national recognition re-cognition to Cedar City last week when the program was adjudged the second best public health program of the nation, only one city, Coffee-ville, Coffee-ville, Kansas, did a better Job in the opinion of the judges at the National Jaycee Convention in San Diego. Coffeeville was awarded first place in the contest and Cedar City second, with more than four hundred hund-red cities competing. Cedar City was competing with all cities with a population of less than 25,000, and most off those entered en-tered were much larger than this community. Coffeeville has a population pop-ulation of more than 18,000. The Cedar City Jaycees won first place in the Utah State Contest and second? in the National, to bring much recognition to the local club and community. ' The fly control campaign conducted con-ducted last year under the direction of Frank Milne, who was named Cedar City's outstanding young man of 1946, proved to be exceptionally successful. The fly menace had reached such a stage that Cedar City was receiving much unfavorable unfavor-able comment from travelers and health officials, to say nothing of the danger to the health of people of the city. The Jaycees conibatted this menace men-ace by a strenuous campaign to have all property owners eliminate all fly-breeding places, after which the Jaycees sprayed) practically the entire city with DDT. The result was amazing and during the latter part of the summer flies were practically prac-tically non-existent in the city. The Junior Chamber is attempting to repeat the campaign this year, but in spite of repeated appeals to property owners they are not receiving receiv-ing the cooperation they should and the season of the year when flies become a real menace Is approaching approach-ing fast. |
