Show THE PHE Argus of last week makes a wail about the danger that is threatening the schools schools- of Salt Lake City from the employment of trained imperfectly and educated home teachers in place of the present force of trained teachers In this connection it says that the results have been better where talented and trained teachers have been in than where charge University of Utah veneered instructors hold the therod therod therod rod of government There is one good thin thing about the theArgus theArgus Argus and that is that that- it never beats about the bush you always know what it means Even when it becomes absurd absurd absurd ab ab- surd it speaks out with such confident boldness that even its absurdities do donot donot donot not seem to be entirely devoid of truth But But- since the Argus is so bold a champion of the educational interests of the community and is fearless enough to always speak its convictions it will doubtless do the public further service by answering the following questions Is it not true that Utah young men and women possess native talent equal to that of young men and women in any part of the Union And is it not true that the Normal course as offered at the University of Utah is above the average of Normal instruction in the United States This being true how does the Argus justify the epithets I veneered trained imperfectly and imperfectly-educated imperfectly as applied to University of Utah graduates Are there not at the present time many University of Utah graduates em ern in the city schools and are they not at least up to the average in quality of all the teachers Is it not true that the present super superintendent su super super- superintendent p r- r of schools speaks highly of University of Utah graduates Are not several of the very best teachers in the city sch schools young women who were born and r reared ared in Utah and received receive their training at the University of Utah Normal School Is it not true that a number of the trained imported teachers so highly praised by the Argus failed to pass the examination last fall and that the board lowered the passing marks that they might mig continue teaching Was not this examination given by a aboard aboard aboard board of examiners two out of three of whose members are of the University of Utah faculty and will not these gentlemen gentle gentle- men testify to the fact that the examination examination examination examina examina- tion was less difficult than the examinations examinations examinations examina examina- in the same subjects required of University graduates To sustain the reputation for fairness and ability which it is acquiring the theArgus theArgus theArgus Argus cannot avoid answering these queries And ve we e warrant that the editor editor editor edi edi- tor will find the necessary investigation both profitable and edifying J |
