Show 'Mormons' Were First To Use Irrigation i "The Mormon Pioneers were the first to develop irrigation as a sole means of maturing crops" said Wm. R. Palmer, local historian, when he addressed the Lions club members at their meeting Monday noon. He spoke on the subject of the development devel-opment of Irrigation in Utah and gave a most Interesting discussion of the subject. He pointed out that the "Mormons" "Mor-mons" seeking a spot to settle where they would be unmolested by others had chosen Salt Lake Valley and were forced to develop seme means of supplementing the moisture on the land to insure maturity of their crops, and this necessarily resulted result-ed in the beginning of irrigation in the West. The regulations set down by our early church leaders for the distribution dis-tribution of the supply of water, he maintained, later became the basis for laws governing the abdication abdi-cation of water-rights. |
