Show k The Wanderer J 5 I s r At-r THE Wanderer was VaS d down wn in the CHRONICLE office the other da day It was the last day of the school week and the editors were rushed to death in trying to get the the paper out on time He thought at first that he was imposing on their good nature in standing around Perhaps they might have some business i to transact in privacy or perhaps they might ight want to make liberal use of the side-board side and would not dare to do so in the presence of a stranger He was about to go out when an editor accosted l' l f him and told him that he was labOI laboring ing k J under misapprehension The box of j J cigars was handed him and he sat c- c down in the corner to enjoy a quiet smoke 1 or 10 It It was a great sight to see those young young men and and women at work First of 1 all was the Business Manage Manage- who was J. J leaning over a desk marked Business f and Local Department He had a wet rag tied about his head and was absorbed in the deepest thought The Wanderer fancied that he was thinking about a lecture for the Mathematical Society but he he was not He was trying t to make ends meet on the paper and he wondered what was the best method ate 1 to make subscribers pay up The A Wanderer will tell him right now if he f keeps on he will have softening of the lt t brain bram Then there was the local editor J He too was bandaged up The Wat Wa Wa- t derer asked him what was the matter with his arm He replied that he was wast t in the act of taking some papers out of I the contribution box and in doing so came across some jokes which were so heavy that they sprained his wrist The Ther r J Wanderer 0 Wanderer was introduced to a young f. f lady whom they term The Associate E Editor She was correcting copy and said that she came across so many mistakes mistakes mistakes mis mis- takes that she would have to do one of two things quit the paper or die At this moment a knock was heard at the door A young lady with an all ing eye and flushed face appeared and angrily asked for the in Editor He went out and shut the door after him What the young lady had to say sayto sayto sayto to him the Wanderer does not know but he has had a pale face and haggard eye ever since They said the young lady was a Miss Rienne But say all those lady editors caught the Wanderers Wanderer's eye Hed He'd give ten dollars if he we were e eon on the CHRONICLE staff Then there was wasa a Mr Smith who scorns to do any work except in his shirt sleeves He made madean an apology of course for their their- dark appearance saying that Saturday was changing day The Wanderer has nei neither her space nor time to describe the rest of the editors but he is convinced that they move the world c fc The Wanderer had to smile when he heard of the formation of a German f f Club which meets every Saturday evening evening evening even even- ing at the home of some one one ne of its mem members bers for the purpose of acquiring an easy pronunciation and ready command command command com com- mand of the German language The club puts the Wanderer in mind of one oneto oneto oneto to which he belonged three or four years Tears ago only his was a French Club The members had all solemnly declared that they would not speak one word of mother English during the whole evening The first time they met was at th the home of a gentleman member The Wanderer was rather late in going Bon BOll soil monsieur monsieur mon mon- sai said he in greeting his host Surely the host would answer in French but this was the reply Hello Frank Im I'm d n d n glad to see you Come right in we thought you weren't coming On entering the room in which the guests were assembled the Wanderer found the girls in one end of the room and the boys iJ in the other Ah this s must be French style to have the sexes separated Surely they must be talking French here thought the Wanderer When he stepped up to the young ladies he found them looking over one of the late numb numbers rs of the Delineator and di discussing di dis- cuss cussing ng in English which was the prettiest prettiest prettiest pret pret- style When he stepped over to the boys he found them talking in in dear dearold dearold dearold old mother English about the recent football game Such the Wanderer fears is the case with the new German Club WELL well well who would have thought that one of our professors would join in all the festivities of the recent E Delta Phi ball and become for a time one of the boys hoys Yet such was the case and it filled the Wanderers Wanderer's heart wi with th gladness to see our professor throw aside all loftiness and enjoy himself as some have never enjoyed themselves be be- fore There is an intimacy an and feeling of good good- good will ill on the part of our students and professors which is not ver very often met with and such a condition as we here enjoy makes college life all the better and happier The Wanderer has hasin hasin hasin in mi mind d one of our professors who seldom seldom seldom sel sel- dom if ever has a word to say to the students on any subject outside of classroom classroom classroom class class- room work He seems to think himself f so far above the students that it would be unbecoming and belittling to p place ace himself on the same plane with them Such a man is universally disliked and andis andis andis F is a fit subject for ridicule But happily that man has not many followers here IT would be a great improvement if ift t the college authorities would find another place for the Physical CuI Culture ture Class Clas to ton n use Not that the hall is not a good place but but our fair in their striking costumes have shocked the modesty of some some of our religious boys The Wanderer Wanderer- for one had quite a thrilling experience the other day Some SomeI I of his friends happened to visit the University one Wednesday afternoon The Wanderer showed them around in inthe inthe the basement took them into the armory armory armory ar ar- mory then into the laboratory then into Y the physical apparatus room and into the CHRONICLE office Of course he had t to show them the museum and the library library library lib lib- and the mathematical instruments or they would miss half of the college As they were all going upstairs they heard the tramping of a large number of feet and one of the visitors remarked that something unusual must be going on The Wanderer replied that he thought one of the classes had just been let out Accordi Accordingly ly after reaching the top of the stairs stairs they walked slowly on fin until the they were fairly in the hallway Here they they- perceived quite a number of ladies advancing towards them in cadenced cadenced cadenced cad- cad step Miss Babcock stepped up and asked what was wanted The Th reply was th that t they were just looking about h the building Then they were informed that they must get off this floor for the girls objected to having anyone watch them The Wanderer felt like caving through He blushed a crimson hue his hair stood on ends and to make it all the worse the girls commenced to laugh He made a hasty retreat an and left his friends to their own fate N Now ow his friends dont don't speak to him any anymore more And all on account of that Physical Culture Class Mischief thou art afoot on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays VERILY the world doth move Cupid surely is not at rest He has invaded our sacred precincts of learn learning ing and nd done good work among the professors as well as the students The Wanderer for one has a bad case of it but he is not alone in this world He receives new encouragement every day that he walks through the halls and beholds the sick love-sick couples standing around in every available corn corner r. r Why the museum is not large enough to hold Iti i them all Ah Ali how happy is the report r that Mr White is to be married on the thet t ha ha the Wanderer has to tot i Ha t laugh and yet his heart is is saddened if that all As r He has to laugh because he sees the learning in the world cannot throw 4 a damper on mans man's instincts and his r heart is saddened because his finances a C are too low to permit him to join Mr rL 4 t White In such a case what can the u I. I Wanderer do He gr grasps Mr White by the hand and extends May happiness ever attend him himas f as a sunbeam in his pathway And p who knows who the next one will be Prof Marshall Prof Mathews Prof Prof Merrill Prof Cummings Cummings- all single I- I t t Its It's a shame f r |
