N Y May 4 1894 DEAR SIR President SIR President Schurman requests me to acknowledge acknowledge acknowledge ac ac- knowledge the receipt of your letter of April 28 and to say that term examinations have not been abolished in in Cornell University The week at the close of each term formerly given up to examinations has been abolished however But each instructor is still required to report ten marks i and it is left to his awn own judgment to discover means for such grading The result has been that in very many cases perhaps in the majority of cases a series of preliminary examinations held during the term have taken the place of the single final examination This new custom was begun last term and is still on trial It cannot be said that it is altogether satisfactory Respectfully yours Signed A.
