Show TT IT T seems that the Coxey craze craz has penetrated several of our most em eminent emi emi- i- i nent colleges nent-colleges colleges both east east and west The students of Yale law school were prevented prevented prevented pre pre- vented from parading with the common- common only by the interference of the Dean of that institution Several hundred hundred hundred hun hun- dred students of another down east college college college col col- lege actually did parade and in one or two cases both students and instructors of west middle-west institutions turned out outto outto outto to greet the marching armies But we have heard of no such madness in any college or other institution of learning west of the great plains This speaks well for the wild and west We believe that most students of this region understand the situation pretty well and know that in the present situation there is more serious work to be done than getting out on the campus and shouting themselves hoarse over this fanatical movement The state of affaIrs affairs affairs af af- fairs is deplorable enough to be sure but the parading and the shouting and andall andall andall all the other excesses so popular nowadays nowadays nowadays now-a- now days can safely be left to the thousands who can find nothing better to do The thousands of men throughout the land who have been out of employment so long have to d do something just for pass- pass time but students should be better em em- The deplorable financial and social conditions that prevail vail at present are the result of evils which have been long in operation and which no rio amount of such demonstration as is now going on can ever remedy We Weare are in need of education in financial and social matters and if our universities and colleges cannot provide this education they are worse than useless It would be rather a sad commentary on our so much lauded education if whenever a crisis comes the educated d' d could do 1 nothing better than to shout with the 1 rabble 1 There ought to be a lesson here for those presumptuous people who think all J culture confined to New England and who seem to think that trat civilization cannot cannot cannot can can- not possibly extend farther west than Chicago You can never catch up with New England said a prominent Boston educator here in this city two- two years ago Perhaps the west doesn't want to catch up with New England it itis itis is js just possible that the very worst worst- thing that could happen to the entire nation would be for it to take New England as a model and try to keep pace with it To follow the lead of New England it seems would be to settle ourselves comfortably within the shell of sectional prejudice to declare ourselves the only transcendental perfect perfect perfect per per- to let the rest of the country peopled peopled peopled peo peo- pled by creatures of inferior mould go goto goto goto to the dogs and throw every obstacle obstacle- in the way of their advancement and then finally when our discarded surplus surplus surplus sur sur- plus population unable to subsist elsewhere elsewhere elsewhere else where because of our selfish stupidity began to return to us to show that after all we could do less with our our- brains than with our tongues The west is all right The Coxey movement movement move move- men ment is nothing more nor less than the return to the east of the floating population population population lation that has been straining west forthe forthe for for- forthe the last twenty years Under normal J conditions all these people could have 1 found good homes and steady e employment employ employ- ment here Our friends of the east have simply closed the safety valve valve of their boiler if there is an explosion they alone are responsible j Those who have permanent interests J Jin in the west know that the march on Washington is not the way out of the present difficulties and that so far as as the west is concerned at least it is only a question of a few years until t j r prosperity will return But wi with th the return of prosperity will come another influx of the surplus population of the eastern seaboard and for the west to to support them it must have the cooperation cooperation cooperation oper co of the east In order to have continued continued con con- prosperity there must mus be perfect unity there must be no more sectional legislation no more clinging to eastern and English money brokers and no attempts attempts attempts at- at at at- tempts to establish the same in other sections of the country Universities Universities Uni Uni- and colleges can do much too towards towards to to- o wards bringing about the desired unity and g good Jod feeling but they cannot do it by shouting with the |
