Show Pioneer Resident Dies Yhen Struck by Car Richard T. Higbee. 91, pioneer resident of Toquerville and father fath-er of Edwin and Clair Higbee of Cedar City, was killed instantly Monday evening when he was struck by a skidding car in Toquerville. To-querville. The accident occurred as Mr. Higbee was crossing the street and the driver was unable to stop his car on the icy roadway. road-way. Sheriff Antone B. Prince of Washington county, who investigated inves-tigated the accident reported that the driver of the car was Merrill Olds, 32, of Toquerville. He reported re-ported that Olds could not stop his car in time to avoid striking strik-ing the accident victim. The car skidded through a fence and jammed against a rock wall. No citations were issued. The victim suffered fractures of both legs, jaw and nose, in addition ad-dition to severe lacerations and other injuries. Mr. Higbee was bom in Plain City on Dec. 2, 1859, and moved to Toquerville when he was three years of age.JJe. married Lorlne L. Lamb on Dec. 23, 1881 at To querville. He spent most of his life in the Washington county community, except for a short time he spent at Silver Reef and a year at Buckskin Mountain. He and Mrs. Higbee were honored at Toquerville last December on their 69th wedding anniversary. He had been active in Indian affairs during the early history of southern Utah and had been instrumental in maintaining peace with the tribes of the area during the early settlement of Washington county. He was also active in L D S church affairs. af-fairs. He is survived by his widow and three sons and two daughters, daugh-ters, Loren Higbee, Compton, California; Cal-ifornia; Edwin and Clair Higbee, Cedar City; Mrs. Rhea Wakeling, Toquerville, and Mrs. Lila Hull, Del Monte, Calif. Funeral services are being held in Toquerville this afternoon after-noon at the ward chapel. Burial will be at Toquerville. |
