Show Joint Debates POR F OR severa several years past there has been one or more joint debates between some of the University societies or between between be he- tween some one of the societies and some outside club during each school year These contests have lively and interesting and have constituted a marked feature of our college life therefore it is to he be hoped they will be continued There is nothing in college life at once more interesting and instructive than these contests Here self-reliance self is gained and with it the power to cope with opposing argument Nor is there any better safeguard against falling into the habits ts of a mere worm book-worm than this actual setting forth and measuring of ones one's thoughts In fact one never knows his own capabilities until he has measured them by actual contact and comparison with the capabilities of others In general show us us s a professor lawyer or lecturer who is dry and uninteresting and we will show you one who has neglected this part of his education Our literary and debating societies have been doing good work we want to see them do still better They should meet each other fair on open grounds in the great arena rena of thought In the conflict of opinions both sides may be victorious |
