Show H LOOKING BACKWARD TO THE average resident of Cedar City, who has been in tho town 1 all tho while, no very striking changes H or growth seems apparent. We com- M plain all tho timo of a lack of money H and business, and tho only thing that H appears to increase much is taxes and M living expenses. But in reality, thero M is n rapid and steady growth, both in H business and population. Perhaps M there in no better theromoter by H which to measure tho business of n m town than tho post office, and a few m facts in relation to the growth and B development of tho business of tho H post ofllco during recent years may fl prove interesting. M The writer has served tho people of 1 Cedar City in tho capacity of post- H ! master for six years and nino months, M there is no better thermometer by I first of tho present month. During this period, 21,440 domestic money orders were written, as against 11, IG08 for the 14 years and one month that money order business was done here previously. Tho receipts for box rents for tho quarter next previous to our assum ing charge of tho ofilco amounted to $15.75; for tho last full quarter of our M ,jk administration in the office, $63.70 M , was collected. At the time the writer M ' was appointed postmantor, something m ' like forty daily papers were taken; M j today, over 175 daily papers are dis- H tributod through tho local office. Dur- M jj ing tho writer's administration, the ! office has passed from the fourth to tho third, or Presidential class, tho change occurring four years ago. The I office has also been made an inter- hhh . nutlonal money order office, tho postal I savings department has been added, and the parcel post provisions have , gone into effect,-all of -which have tcn- H- ded to greatly increaso the work of H' tho office. Mails have doubled or M trebled in volume; and as the moils H and business of tho office grew, more B roomy and commodious quarters were B k required. These were supplied, with H . an equipment that will compare fnv- H i orably with any to be found in any B office of corresponding importance in H ' the West, and heartily commended, H j for its location, equipment and ar- m j rangement by government inspectors M M visiting the office. 1 ' Wo aro not out for the purpose of M i tooting our own horn, but it is only H !l fair to state that there has never M il been any serious complaint as to tho H conduct of tho office or tho way the H ' work has been kept up. Wo have H ''. tried to do our duty, both by tho H ' government and tho people, and we H l relinquish tho place with a clear con- m science, and wo believe a fairly clean H I record. B Our successor is a competent and H J honorable young man, and will un- H ( doubtcdly make Codar City an ob- H 1 liging and efficient postmaster. H But tho important feature of this H ; matter is tho indication that it gives ,-- of the growth nnd development of Cedar City in a commercial nnd business busi-ness sense, and the future progress of tho town that it portends. Cedar City and Iron county are destined to assume an important position in the development of tho state, and some day will perhaps rival Salt Lake City in an industrial and commercial sense. |
