Show GOOD ROADS AID PROSPERITY Instance Cited of Virginia Community, Where Great Progress Has Been Accomplished. That good, rouds are closely related to- prosperity there Is no question of doubt. Only a few years ugo this section of Virginia hnd but one mucad-am mucad-am road, one creamery, Which went to the wnll, nnd n mere hunaful of pure-bred dairy cattle, writes C. C Conger, Jr.. of Virginia In the Practical Practi-cal Fanner. One not familiar with the many blessings good rouds bring about might wonder In what wuy good roads would affect creameries nnd pure-bred cows. Let us take, for Instance, In-stance, Kocktughum county, and see Just what good roads did In this section sec-tion In tho dulry business alone, to say nothing of tho prosperity good roads brought about In various other ways. Previous to our good roads the one creamery did some business during dur-ing the summer mouths, when the dirt rouds were ut their best, but business dwindled to nothing during the whiter months because farmers could n6t get over the roads to deliver their milk. The creamery finally closed down for thu lack of milk. About this time a meru handful of progressive fanners began a movement for better roads calling n meeting at a little vlllngt centrally located In the county. The attendance was good, and a great deal of "good roads" enthusiasm tviu aroused. It was thu first step In better bet-ter roads that gained impetus by loap and bounds. Today, In 11 (ew short years, we have a network of lino macadam mac-adam rouds throughout the entire county. Following good ronds came creameries. They sprung up over ingTit llko mushrooms, till today thu county Is dotted with creameries, thu sight of which docs not look much like closing clos-ing down for the lack of milk, particularly par-ticularly during the early hours of the day, when auto trucks are pouring In from thu country, bringing milk from every nook and corner of the county. Pure-brod cows ciinio with the creameries, cream-eries, till today scrub stock no longer domlnntes our farms. Ask any farmer why he disposed of his scrub cows, replacing re-placing them with puro breds, nnd hfl will tell you the, creameries did It. j F I Stretch of Hard Surface Road In Vlr glnla. Ask him whnt brought tho creameries, and he will tell you better ronds. While milk has slumped somewhat nt times In this section, It has never halted the dairy business, und farmers farm-ers are now reporting fair profits In dairying. The weulth that good roads bus brought to this section In dairying dairy-ing alono Is astonishing. Wo arc striving for more wealth and prosperity pros-perity by building still more good rouds. Experience has taught us thai good roads, weulth and prosperity go hand In hand. |
