Show utah s resources arc are investigated 4 lations zat ions of the united states geological survey ja ji utah are so closely related to tho the development of the principal industries of the state that these investigations arc are of special interest to all citizens afie fact that tho the geological survey as a result of its widespread activities throughout tho country oven even ox extending tending into alaska and hawaii distributes every year over a million reports and maps and answers over letters indicates the extent to which its conclusions are sought along the lines of development of natural resources investigations tho the metal mining districts of the eastern portion of utah will be vis cited duding the present season by B b S butler who will later prepare a general I 1 report on the ore deposits deposit of utah G P n will co operate with mr duller butler in the investigation of somo some of tho the districts especially ally in tho the wasatch range I 1 reconnaissance examination of the vanadium and uranium deposits in eastern utah will be mado made by F L hess who will g give iva considerable attention to the mining of for the production or radium in which there is widespread public interest the great ore supplies from which the radium ol 01 the world is made being located in this region I 1 the geologic ang of tho ai accas cat 93 Ls tho the sunnyside and wellington quadrangles in carbon county which contain the most im coal reserves of high grade grado coal in the state will be completed by F R dark clark who will classify the lands similar examinations and mapping in the vernal region will be carried on bj b E G woodruff assisted by M W ball especial attention being given by mr ir woodruff to certain deposits of bituminous which are capable of 5 yielding oil and aasin considerable consider ablo quantities on distillation til lation special examinations and tests of these sidles in the field will bo be made at a number of points in order 1 0 o aeten mine whether they are rich in hydrocarbons ns to qualify them as a res reserve store house for the production of 0 ol 01 1 l and gas by distillation on a commercial scale 4 topographic mapping in progress the topographic branch of the horvey is at work in mapping two 80 30 minute and two wo 3 35 5 minute quadrangles rang les with the respective appropriate areas each of square miles and square miles the first two are ard the logan quadrangle in cael cache 1 a and box elder counties and in the thee cache national forrest forr cst and the vernal quadrangle in uinta county the two fifteen minute quadrangles dran are the Sunny sunnyside side and wellington in carbon county the logan quadrangle is being surveyed by to raphers H H hodgeson and howard dark clark the vernal by oscar jones C and E 0 burt the sunnyside Sunny side by E P davis and the wellington by E R bartlett this work will include the detailed surveys necessary to prepare a map which will show all the rivers towns roads and railroads as well as the surface relief of the country by means of 60 50 and foot contour lines the completed maps will be engraved on the scales kales of 1 and 2 miles to the inch and will probably not be ready for distribution until two years after the completion of the field work water resources investigations the water resources of the state of utah with particular reference to the flow of surface waters are being investigated by the united states 0 geological survey in in co operation with the state and others other for this purpose 76 stations are maintained in utah 18 of which are on streams of the colorado river basin and 58 on streams of the great basin 24 stations are located on canals or ditches all the stations are maintained in operation cooperation co with the state in addition the forest service operates cooperates co on three stations the U S weather bureau on one municipalities on six and private persons on 32 at those stations the height heights or stage of the rivers is determined each day by local observers and at some stations h by v automatic matic gages and measurements ure ments of the discharge of the streams are made by engineers of the survey when feasible from those data the quantity of water flowing past the stations is determined stream flow daar are of particular value in utah in the design construction st and operation of power plants and irrigation projects and in carey act examinations and investigations for the proper classification of the public lands in addition much use is found for the record records in all problems where the quantity of water ia in involved such as those relating to river regulation stream pollution water storage seepage flood control and municipal water supplies the
