H H Speakers Declare Much of the fl Money Used for Road Build- ;H ing Has Been Sqnandcred ll Pursuant to the anouncoment 'fl previously made, a mass mooting H was held in the city hall Wed- 11 nesday night for the ostensible H purpose of protesting against tfl tho present rate of taxation and . 11 the method of expending tho H road funds of the county. 11 Bishop Wm. N. Corry presided lH as chairman of the meeting, and jH tho views and opinions cxprcscd -iH were as wide cpart as the shores il of the seas. Tho concensus of 'H opinion, however, was to the of- 'H feet that the taxes of Iron . '11 couty are too high, so much so t 11 that they are a burden to many . 11 in poor circumstances, and that iH somo means should be found to . jH reduce them. jH Mayor Donald C. Urio was H prcsont to justify the increase )H this yearin the city taxes;-givy iiH ings-asannhccOTBtTUc'ijing fjdH of the now reservoir and the f Hl extensive repairs to the pipo lines of tho water system. '1 The more moderate speakers ')f? advised the wisdom of ascer- fuB taining first whether or not any "Ijl of the lovy as at present exist- 'fl ing could be omitted, before v! making reckless charges as to 01 the lack of need for the prcsont H rate. tJI However , there was a general 11 sentiment among those present til to the effect that the county is 11 not getting full value in return ' for the funds it is expending for H the construction of roads and "H highways. On this matter, 11 there was a feeling of genuine l indignat'on on the part of a con- sidcrable number, and several of 'H the speakers were pointed in 11 their personal references to those 11 whom they charged with being '11 responsible for squandering of funds, which, it was said, has H been due to incompetency. 11 No definite action was taken, jH and the meeting adjourned till next Tuesday, when the subject H will be taken up for further dis- 1 cussion. Some look upon the meet- J ing as a political move, while lH others are without doubt sin cere H in their attitude and feel that H something should be done to re- H lieve the tax burden that is at :B present weighing heavily on the ..H people of Iron county. -H H |
