Show DISPOSAL OF MANURE IN RURAL DISTRICTS. The question always comes up, what is to be done with manure that accumulates after the land is all planted, so that the fies can be controlled? Following is brief sum-summary sum-summary from farmers' bulletin 815: "Borax is a very effective larvi-cide. larvi-cide. The minimum amount necessary neces-sary to kill fly larvae is .62 pounds per eight bushels -of manure, or about one pound per sixteen cubic feet. The best results are obtained when borax is applied in solution or when water is sprinkled on the pile when borax is scattered. Borax also prevents the eggs from the fly from hatching as well as kills the larvae. When applied in this strength 90 per cent of the larvae are killed. Investigations have shown that borax has no injurious effectsj on the composition of the manure as a fertilizer when treated at the rate of one pound per sixteen cubic feet and applied not more than fifteen tons per acre. However," if larger applications of manure so treated are applied to the soil considerable injury may be caused, therefore, great qare should be exercised in applying ap-plying the borax so that not more than one pound will be used to sixteen six-teen cubic feet of manure and not more-than fifteen ton of this be applied to the acre. |
