Show FUNGI THAT DAMAGE CANVAS Frequently Within the Space of Threa Months the Material Will De Made Useless. Major W. Broughton-Alcock of the British army made some studies on the fungi that cause black and brown spots on ennvns tents, awnings, etc., and thnt bring nbout a more or less rapid destruction of such articles. A note on tho subject by J. Ramstwttom appears In Nature. The Investigations were carried out partly In Malta, where, It Is said, awnings last only about n year. Tho principal destructive destruc-tive ngents In the case of cotton nnd flax-made canvas were found to be Mncrosporlum nnd Stemphylium. Tho vnriatlon in tho color of tho spots Is found to be duo to tho presence of various other fungi In association with the genera above mentioned. Tho first signs of fungoid growth appear on the Inner side of tho roof portions of tents and marquees. Often within three months pressure on the spots made by the fungi lends to perforation, perfora-tion, or a strong wind cnuses tearing. Experiments showed thnt tho Willes-den Willes-den (cuprnmmonlum) method ntid cutch treatment prevented the growth of the fungi. Scientific Amerlcnn. |
