Show THE "OIL SLINGER" MACHINE. More than half of my life ngo tho cashier of a bauk tapped on tho window win-dow "as I was passing and motioned n.o in. lie was a stockholder In a factory and offered mo a placo I had been seeking. That was Thursday afternoon and tho last day of, high school for mo. Tho next morning at sovon o'clock I stood by a big chuck as ono of soventy workers. My clothing cloth-ing wns not sultablo for any machlno and tho chuck machine was tho worst ono on clothing. Tho boys smiled and predicted a change in my nppearanco very soon. My work was to knurl tho hoad of tho long scrow which moves tho Jaw of a monkoy wrench. In those days tho chuck had to bo stop-pod stop-pod and started for each scrow; as it started up tho oil began to fly and tho faster tho chuck rovolvod tho greater tho penetrating power 'of tho oil when It hit mo. In order to do tho work I had to get in tho way of tho oil; I did tho work but traced tho oil from my clothing to tho chuck and tho scrow which camo to mo loaded with it. Tho oil was secured in tho thread cutting machine whore a ptoady stream ran on tho die; somo would havo seen all this at first glance without thinking, but I did not; I oven studied tho bearings as tho source of tho trouble, beforo finding find-ing it on tho screws. When I did find tho placo of tho troublo I put a bunch of wasto there and laid the screws on It beforo putting them in tho chuck; tho waste drow tho oil off and tho machine lost Its name. Tho machlno lost its name becauso I was dissatisfied dissatis-fied with conditions, bogan tracing tho trouble and found tho remedy... When a former workman at that chuck yisttod tho factory and asked whoro oil had gono to, on being told tho plan ho opened his eyes and said nothing. He may havo been thinking about tho amount of oil ho had taken homo on his clothing. Thero aro both big and little opportunities in overy shop .and factory for bettor methods and originality, mutually useful to employer em-ployer and employe. |
