Show NEW NORMAL BUILDING' Basement Story Wnlls Up Poorly Burned Bricks In Some Parts. i Hcaritiir considerable street inllt about tlys l' 'yjOtlJW-iSA ."-A--'. tlmt IsVclnf useUf'jmM.ho construction" of tho new Normal building, our reporter report-er visited the structure yesterday so thqt we might be able to speak advisedly on tho subject. As is often the case the troublo was not as bad ns we were led to believe by so mo of the stories that juyMrtToat, but wo were sorry to sec that there is some foundation for complaint, nnd we could not forbear the thought that if somo men wo could name had tho work In hand, such material as is being used in certain parts woulc not be nxeepted. The joists am laid for tho Prst floor, above tho basement story, and the walls are now being built above that floor. The brick work up to this floor seems to be of good quality, both in regard to materia! and workmanship; work-manship; but thu brick tlrat is being used on thu story now being built Is n hor we mean brick of another color, col-or, und we fear what Is of more importance, impor-tance, of another quality. They have the appearance of not being well burned, burn-ed, and there can be llttlo doubt that they will not stand the weather. That many of the bricks that have been carted cart-ed there were of very poor qualltv is plainly shown by the large quantity of them that lie molderlng to dirt on the west side of the building. Some few of tliis sort have found their way Into tho walls that aro in sight, how many nre hidden we have no means of knowing. know-ing. In leveling the joists, instead of using a wall plate of board, ns is generally gen-erally the custom even for tho floors of ordinary buildings the joists are laid on bits boitrd or shingle which arc resting on tho brickwork. However, the Ignorance Igno-rance of our reporter on up-to-date building methods is to be taken Into nccouut in this matter, and when due allowance has bceu mndo for this It may bo found that everything Is lovely. |
