Mr. Kyrlo was a great lover ot trcos, and especially of elms, of which he planted an avonue near tho church. Ono of the trees of this avenue was cut down, and. It Is supposed that Its offshoots have grown up Inside of tho church at each ontl of the pew. The parish church at Kompsey contains a cheBtnut tree which grows from tho tomb of Sir Edward Wilde. Tho school children of tho village used to sit in tho chancel, and It Is said on one occasion tholr teacher found ono of thorn eating a chestnut, nnd that ho snatched It away ami throw It bo hind tho tomb, whoro It took root and has flourished. |
