Show Labor Is Scarce in Ireland. Father Brosnan, the assistant director at the Mission of Our Lady of the Rosary, at Rochester, arrived in New York a few days ag'o, after a two months' sojourn in Ireland. While abroad Father Brosnan looked into tiff cause of the immigration of young Irish people to this country, which this year is twice as great as it was last year. "Laborers were never more scarce in Ireland than they are at present." he said concerning the result of his inquiries. "The farmers cannot get help, and the crops are suffering because they are not being attended to. The average pay for a farm hand has advanced to 4s a day, which is twice as much as was paid when I was a boy. The young people do' not seem to know that the amount of money which they earn there -is worth double what . it is worth here in the way of purchasing power. "All of them think that America is a promised land, and they all want to come . here. .If you question any one of them lie will say that he has friends who are doing very well here, and that as soon iis ho gets enough money be is going to follow." |
