I There are many notable pictures al- I ready in place, and many more are I constantly arriving. The exhibit from New York arrived Saturday, but has not yet been taken from the packing cases. The guards at the state prison "are i anxious to see adopted by the legislature legisla-ture the recommendation by the appropriation appro-priation committee of $7,000 for prison maintenance during the ensuing two years. This will relieve the guards of twelve hours of continuous diKy every day. and enable the work to be "divided into shifts of eight hours each. There are desperate men in a state prison to whom liberty is sweet enough to make a dash for at any and every opprtunity. Plots are hatched up and watch must be kept, for all such things. The pay is small, and the mind is constancy on the tension. Twelve hours a day, seven days in the week, the guards lind too much of a strain, and hav long desired relief, especially in the way .-f shorier hours. Then they will b able to see something of their families and take more interest in their work.
