Show BLOODLESS SURGERY. Prof. Lorenz, the Eminent Austrian., at Holy Cross Hospital. " Friday of last week marked the birth of bloodless surgery in Salt Lake. The new knifeless method of reducing congenital hip dislocation was introduced intro-duced by Professor Adolph Lorenz. the eminent Austrian surgeon, who, free of any charge,- performed, with every apparent indication of success, two of the most remarkable operations that were ever performed west of the Rockies.- The work of the world-famous surgeon sur-geon was witnessed with the most intense in-tense interest by nearly all of Salt who traveled hundreds of miles to view what is believed to be the dawn of a new era in surgery in the west. With such ease and skill did Dr. Lorenz and his arristant, Dr. Fritz Mueller,' perform the operations that they had been completed almost before the uninitiated realized that they had begun. The proficiency with which the celebrated cele-brated surgeon went about his work and the ease with which he accomplished accom-plished his end, won the deepest admiration ad-miration of every surgeon present. It was with the most sincere deference and appreciation that the hand of the eminent surgeon was shaken by . almost al-most every physician there, after the operation had been completed But the doctors were not' the only ones who had cause to rejoice over the operations. The hearts of two Utah homes were made happy, and two little ones were relieved of a deformity de-formity that, but for the benign instincts in-stincts and generous-heartedness of Dr. Lorenz, would have no doubt attended them to the grave, a source of sorrow to their parents and an impediment to their progress in the world.: The children operated upon were , Muril Raush, a 3-year-old girl of this , city, and Edwin Walker, a 3-year-old j boy from Riverton. The operating paraphernalia of the celebrated surgeon failed to arrive, but, rather than leave here without holding hold-ing a clinic, Dr. Lorenz improvised out of what material was at hand the necessary instruments, and performed the operations in a remarkably short space of time. At the conclusion he assured the anxious parents that their children would be well and free from deformity within two years at the outside. out-side. A striking and pitiful contrast to the joy caused these parents was the sorrow sor-row of those who were doomed to disappointment. dis-appointment. Of these, there were a number who came to the hospital with J their suffering children, hoping that j their, distress might be relieved, only to learn that the cases of their loved ones could not be operated upon because be-cause of peculiarities in the cases,. or lack of time. These turned away with the tears streaming down their faces, and the unspeakable sympathy of the great surgeon, and every one who saw them, went after, them. t The operations, to those who witnessed wit-nessed them, were revelations of possibilities, pos-sibilities, and so careful was D(r. Lorenz Lo-renz in explaining every point of the operation, that the doctors declare it will be but a short time until they will perform like operations. It is the avowed intention of the foremost surgeons sur-geons of the city to apply themselves to this particular kind of work, and study it until they shall have mastered its principles aril become able, to relieve re-lieve such cases as these that come under their care. |
