Show A Painful Joke. (New York Times.) There Is- a lack of humor that Is humorous, hu-morous, according to" ex-Senator Pettl-grew Pettl-grew of South Dakota. An instance of it occurred" at a little Informal society affair af-fair which ,the ex-senator attended in Washington. "Conundrums got .to going around," eaid the senator, "and I could only think of one, which I used with apologies. It was, 'Wrhat'fi the difference between a man going outdoors in the winter and tt dog?' The answer Is, ai man1 puts on an overcoat and the dog pants. "Everybody politely laughed. But a man's sins do follow him. A few nighld ! ufterward I was at a d'nner where one ! of the guests was a young woman who I had heard me propound my conundrum. She remembered and told it, crediting me with the ownership of 'the clever thing.' No one guessed it. In glee at the privilege, privi-lege, the young woman announced the answer. . " 'Why, the man puts on an overcoat and the dog trousers.' Every tne was puzzled. I leaned over and whiskered to the ydung woman, setting her right. " 'Oh. yes. I forgot, she said. 'It's pantaloons Instead of trousers.' " |
