Show THE BALTIMORE FIRE. The story of the Baltimore fire, thrilling in ! description of tremendous destruction, has a silver finish. The narrative is not punctuated with horror. hor-ror. Although -in magnitude of loss it is a close second to the Chicago fire of 1871, it is almost free of human sacrifice. Tho death of ono fireman marks the only fatality. The loss to property will exceed $125,000,000. Looking over an incomplete list of the buildings build-ings burned, we do not discover any Catholic church or institution among the property devoured by flame. In fact the fire did not enter the residence resi-dence district where, we presume, ehurchs are located. lo-cated. Catholics all over the country should rejoice, re-joice, and the apprehension of the Pontiff will be allayed.. We are living in a day of startling tragedies and calamities. Xo ono can foretell what the next hour may inflict upon the race. Fire, deluge and war successively and rapidly pass in panorama. The war in the far east and the fire at Baltimore broke out the very same day. The sunerst.it'n these calamities as warnings. Perhaps there is reason rea-son in some kind of superstition.. At any rate, tho world is plunged in sin and wickedness. a |
