The Pope is said to be using hi influence to effect a settlement in the great strike of female employes in thc government cigarette factory, fac-tory, which has grown to immense proportions. The government, however, seems determined not to give in, and has employed a great deal of nonunion non-union labor. As a result of this there have been several. sev-eral. pitched battles between striking women and those who have taken their places. A few days u great battle took place in the square which adjoins the Grand canal. "When tho strikers twere in danger of being drivtm into the Water a number of gondoliers came ta their assistance assist-ance and drove back the non-union women. After the battle had lasted for more than an hour the square was surrounded by the police, who succeeded in pacifying the angry women. , , . f- ' . |
