Show God or Mammon? It cannot, you know, be both. Which f The choice is yours today. The consequences conse-quences eternally yours! ' : I This Holy season of Lent is fast ebbing away. I When it shall have forever passed, will your im- mortal soul bear the impress of its special graces I I ' 1 I Will ihe Russian government never be admin- I istered from the standpoint of modern enlighten- I ment? The idea of requiring three months in I which to reply to the memorial of the Catholic ! Bishops concerning liberty of worship is simply " exasperating. . - , - . It is once more rumored that all funds neces- 1 ' sary Jo the completion of the Moffat road to Salt I Lake arc now at the command of that gentleman, !and that the road is to be operated as an independent, independ-ent, line. May it ever remain such! t " It is the business of every Catholic man to ex- I emplii'y the highest type of the gentleman; , of I every Catholic woman to typify ideal womanhood. 'The latter .are notconspicuously derelict in their sacred duty, but how about the former? 1 More or less despotically, is the life of' society I t ruled by iuYals. The ideals of Christianity and those J id the devotees of mammon .are diametrically op- 1 posed. Even now is there waging a mortal com-- I hat. between the two. with this fair America of ours for their held of battle. I H Catholics arc remiss' in exemplifying to the I world the true Christian spirit, how shall out non- Catholic neighbors ever be brought to a vital real- 1 ization of its surpassing grandeur and loveliness? I . T'' -i'h one consider prayerfully his responsibility i i" this respect, and the world shall ultimately ac- I - ecpt our glorious standard, l I "Dark Bo-saleon" is one of the titles of endear- I . ment Lest owed upon the Emerald Isle that sounds I j i somewhat unfamiliar and strange. It is this title that the Rev. Charles O'Connor took for the theme "f his St; Patrick's day oration at Rock Springs, yn. Copious extracts of this eloquent address will Ik? found on another page of-this issue. ! m" 'f 'r Catholic exchanges sees lit to place I ' ho single-tax propaganda' and revolutionary so- I -i;.lism in ihe saW. category. This is rcprohensi- hie. It cannot be shown that the former is, in its I tendency, in the least subversive of Christian prin- ciplcs. Xor does it tend to, in any way, interfere j witl1 il,diviJual liberty or the development of indi- I vidual character. Wherein, then, is it censurable from a moral or a Christian standpoint? . ; j In ihe Literary Digest of March 2.", there is 1 ventilated an unseemly controversy between Pro- j fessor II. V. Hilprecht of the University of Pcnn- I sylvania and Rev. Dr. J. P. Peters, rector of St. ! ' Michael's church, Xow York, arising over archeo- ' logical explorations in Xippur. The conclusion j seems to be that the former is guilty of "perversity ! or blunder"' in his "ungenerous treatment" of Ihe j latter. A narrow spirit of self-aggrandizement j probably affords a rational explanation of the un- I . fortunate episode. : I Americans inherited prejudiced notions eoncern- ing Catholicism from their Puritanical forebears. ! Happily, 'this is rapidly dying out. The average I American is naturally of a religious temperament !and logical in his mental constitution. ' Hence the people are beginning to regard the Catholic Church I with favor. It now;, devolves upon Catholics to ! exemplify the' true spirit of the Church to their neighbors, and not many more decades will pass I ?r? we'fdia)!, have, in the United States, an ideal j Catholic nation. . i 7 wit ; The attitude of moderation on the part of our government in the treaty negotiations with San Domingo, when the latter assumed an attitude of Liliputian pugnacity and defiance, is to be commended. com-mended. "Cringe not before the strong, nor browT-beat browT-beat the weak," is one of President Roosevelt's manly and admirable mottoes. "Unconscious hypnotism" is the latest startling development in scientific circles. Two" women, mother and daughter, were found lying side by side' in an unconscious state, and the latter died without with-out recovering consciousness. The only explanation explana-tion of the mystery, it is averred, is that the two had unconsciously hypnotized one another. - 4 ' 'Once more a priest came to the rescue. In Doylestown, O., the Hoard of Education was in a dead-lock over the election of - a new member. Eighteen candidates were unsuccessful, none of them 'being able to poll a majority. Finally Father A. G. Herman was placed in nomination.aud he was promptly chosen by a vote of three to one. j - One of our dailies speaks of the bloody feud I which culminated, on last Friday, in a pitched battle in Bingham canyon among factions of Austrians, ,as akin to the old-world vendetta. Why go so far abroad? W need go no farther lhan our own south-land to find the hot-blooded temperament that, when unbridled, is so prolific of., bloody feuds and frequent manslaughter. The conflict in the human heart between the good and "ihe evil, between the love-divine and ihe j love-carnal, is an ever-present conflict. The more j nobly aspiring the heart, the more'-despcrate the struggle for supremacy. Oh, .with what intense solicitude should the child of God array the all-conquering all-conquering forces of a divinely-aided will upon the side of his higher as against his lower nature! . Lishop McFaul of Trenton, X. J., who can hardly hard-ly be accused of sensationalist ic tendencies, charged in a recent pastoral that the higher social circles, including many of the gentler sex, are saturated with alcohol. This is one phase of social development develop-ment resulting from the worship of mammon. The Bishop's pastoral, which treated of the saerednes's of the home, is a document that all might read with much profit to themselves. . . The Russian Empire is now reaping the legitimate legiti-mate harvest of harboring and nurturing a spirit . of venal selfishness and mandacity under the cloak of Christianity. The bomb-thrower is maintain ing a reign of terror and the internal dissentions are rendering it impossible for the government to prosecute its war with Japan at all efficiently, or effectually. Christ, long ago, pronounced the doom of scribes and pharisees. The murder-mania sometimes assumes a most perplexing phase. It is reported that two shots were fired at Rev. W. Blozowiski, a Polish priest, while sitting at a table in his home, inWinnipcg, on last Tuesday. This homicidal diabolism that possesses the souls of. some men must be the direct influence of the demon of darkness and iporal obliquity. obli-quity. And yet there are persons who will contend that tjiere is no personal devil! 4 ; If anyone is inclined to doubt the sterling loyalty to their country of American Catholics he may readily le undeceived by noting the unanimity unani-mity with which, they rally to the support of our present exalted Chief Executive. His intense and sturdy patriotism has struck a responsive chord in the hearts of his Catholic fellow-citizens that should afford an example for worthy emulation on the part of all loyal Americans. 1 The people of Canada are to be congratulated that their system of separate schools, by means of which the teaching of Christian dogmas and morals .is general throughout the. land, has been made universal by its incorporation into the laws of the new provinces. Sir Wilfrid Lauricr, Canada's Can-ada's sturdy and estimable Premier made a valiant fight for this principle, and its' triumph is no doubt largely due to his eloquent speech in its he-half. he-half. - ; 4 . Our readers will, no. doubt,- join us in the sincere sin-cere hope that the rumor that Emperor Nicholas made' an attempt, at self-destruction is ' without foundation in fact. The Czar seems to be a man of noble and humanitarian-impulses. He is cursed with a venal and coxupt bureaucracy, in his government, gov-ernment, which has been the bane of his life, but it is to be hoped that ho,' possesses a sufficient degree of manhood and phristian fortitude to outlive its iniquitous reign. - 1 4 ' It seems to he a foregone conclusion that the advocates of the municipal ownership of the traction trac-tion lilies of Chicago will prevail 'at the ensuing election. In fact, at this distance one is inclined to conclude that the people, regardless of party affiliation, arc almost a unit iii favor of its adoption. adop-tion. The city will find the adjustment to the new conditions a very difficult problem. By a proper and equitable adjustment,' there Avill.be. afforded an invaluable precedent for the rest of the country. It is cident, judging from the tone of the editorials edi-torials in our exchanges, that the Catholic editors of the country Avould be disqualified to -act as jurors in the prosecution of "Standard Oil" and the beef trust. Their cases have been prejudged. It does not by any fficaus follow, however, that, they Avould not mete out exact justice to the' culprits, cul-prits, for their guilt is too patent to admit of any "reasonable doubt." Henco it might be Avell to leave it 1o these deoted editors to rid the land of the deadly incubus of predatory capitalism. Protestant Germany is once more in an extraordinary extraor-dinary ferment. This is all due to .theological de-Aelopment de-Aelopment of "advanced" "thought on the part of one of its adherents. Dr. Fischer, one of the most eminent Protest ant divine of Berlin, insists that all of the old and time-worn concepts of "Christol-ogy" "Christol-ogy" must give way to his new cult. : His more conservative co-religionists are alarmed, and would call a halt. They are irrational and unreasonable. Having abetted, thus far, the "advance of infidelity, they should not now protest against its pursuit, to the end, of the ever-shifting goal of "private judgment." |
