Show !! Coronation Ceremony. From the Salt Lake Herald. "Stiffer the little children to come unto I ir.e." I The touching ancUbcautiful sentiment of 'he Man of Galilee was the spirit that jiredorninated in the pretty and irr.pres-I irr.pres-I i-ive ceremony of the crowning of' the, I imnzo of the lUessed Virgin Marv with wreath of roses bv the little children ! at the chapel of St. Mary's pro-cathedral j ! lust evening. Two hundred and tea lit- tie children ranging in ages from 3 to U years bore garlands of sweet flowers to the statue of Mary and closed the month of May with the sweetest of try-utes try-utes to the mother of the Savior. First came the little girls robed in white and currying white wreaths of flowers. They were led by their banner bearers-Ellen bearers-Ellen Began, Helen Kegler and Bessie Dowell. The boys were preceded by their banner bearers James Callahan, Frank Geisler and George Cimitz. The coronation services opened vjth the hymn by the Children's choir. "Mary, We Crown Thee With Hoses." Little Catherine Owens repeated the act of consecration con-secration to the Sacred Heart. The clioil then sang "Come, Gather at the Altar." The act of consecration to the Blessed Virgin -.was repeated by Eugenie Mercer. Mer-cer. The processional preceding the coronation corona-tion opened with the singing of the solo, "Hail, Mary," by Marguerite Locke, 5 years old. At the close of the solo the LK) children caught up the refrain and began the procession to the altar of the Virgin Mary. The processional was led by the Very Rev. Father Denis Kiely, vicar general of the diocese of Salt Lake, followed by the cross, incense bearers, and twenty acolytes, under the direction of Ray Channing. Then came little Dorothy Dor-othy May White, who was chosen io crown the statue, accompanied by her maids of honor Helen U earns, Mary Lvneh, Margaret and Mary O'Brien. Oriel-la" Oriel-la" Brooks and Helen Steiner. Eugenie Mercer, tin crown bearer, led all of the boys and girls with their garlands and bouquets. Calmly little Miss White ascended the flowered ladder and placed on the head of the statue the beautiful crown of roses. At the close of the simple coronation coro-nation the boys and girls, singing and marching, banked their bouquets and wreaths at the foot of the altar. Rev. Father W. K. Ryan preached a brief sermon on the significance of the ceremony. Rt. Rev. Laurence Scanlan, bishop of Salt Lake, gave the benediction benedic-tion of the blessed sacrament. At the conclusion of the benediction, with either hand on the head of a little tot immediately in front of him. the bishop, in a voice that showed that it was his emotion .that controlled, repeated the words of the Savior: "Suffer the little children to come unto me." Then he thanked the little children for their devotion and said he trusted the Blessed Virgin would watch overw their Innocent lives and keep them pure and devoted. |
