To elect our sympathy and animate our love the different scenes lliat occurred between the Garden of Olives, where Jesus was betrayed by a, traitorous kiss, and Calvary, where He di'd nailed to the cross, were prtsented. Today all emblems of mourning rr rremoved and joy takes the place of sorrow, because be-cause we are celebrating the glorious feast of the vusurrert ion. Every nation na-tion has its heroes, and on certain days the victories which they vron are commemorated. com-memorated. That ceiekvation means j . , joy and gladness to all wh.o share in the fruits of their victories. The Fourth of July is such a day to the American people. It was the nulmiriation of a series se-ries of victories which meant libertv. equality and pursuit of happiness for all its citizens. It niant a new departure depar-ture from the ways of the old world. Every year seems to lend new charms to the joyous feelings exhibited on that 1ay. Merriment and gratitude unite in proclaiming that "tJiat is the day which the Lord hath made." The victory celebrated today was not won by the sword. It was not an earthly conquest. It did not involve any material loss or gain on the belligerents. belli-gerents. It meant no shddine; of blod. except that of the victor. It to a moral, or, perhaps, a better and truer expression, a supernatural victory. It was a victory of truUi over errer. which is the real foundation .f liberty: "The truth shall make you free." It was a victory of good v-er evil, which makes all men equal, for the victor made no distinction of race or complexion. complex-ion. To his law and discipline the prince and peasant were equally bound. "One is your Master in heaven." said he, "and you are His brethren." It meant, too. the pursuit of legitimate happiness for all in this life, and the possession of infinite happiness after death. On this victory then celebrated today rests the fundamental principles of our government, which guarantees to all its citizens liberty, equality and pursuit of happiness, all so dead to the heart of humanity. 1 BATTLE DOES NOT ME A X WAR. Every victory presupposes a battle. but every battle does not mean war or I , 'he shedding of blood. There are intel- I leciua! balttles. commercial battles and I f rumberkss sham battles. In the bat- tie in which our Lord was victorious I it was a contest between good and evil. truth and error, the Kinghom of God !and the kingdom of the world. That batttle began in Bethlehem, but where did it end? That question, apparently I at least, was answered last week. Dur- ! it-g the last days of Holv Week the i church in doleful tones chanted the Tenebrae. The Requiem service on Good Friday, when the cross with its victim was exposed, proclaimed his death, and naturally we sav evi! is victorious, vic-torious, error is victorious, "the kingdom of this world has prevailed over the Kingdom of God. But that death did not end the contest, for the real victory vic-tory came three days later, when Jesus, Je-sus, on the morning of fdie resurrection ", . gave life to his own bodv. Here was ' ! supernatural victory, which is the greatest, grandest and most glorious f all triumphs! If death means a victory, vic-tory, surely to conquer death itself is the greatest of all victories. Hence St Paul, addressing death as the conquering conquer-ing hero of the human race, said- "Oh death, where is thy victory; oh, death' where is thy sting?" This greatest of all victories, namelv a triumph over death, we celebrate today.- It means the conquest of error by truth, of evil by good, of the kintr- Ioom of this world by the Kingdom of 'Od. It means for mar.
