Show J FORCED OUT OT X. OF C. Penalty of Hartford Catholic for Join- j ing Knights of Pythias. I Hartford. Conn. James J. Quinn. a well-known lawyer and a member of the Hartford police board, has uuh-diawn uuh-diawn from the Knights oi Columbus. after a contest with the supreme officers of-ficers of the order. Mr. Quinn accuses Rev. Walter J. Shanley, rector of St. Joseph's Cathedral of this city, of having hav-ing started the trouble by complaining to the supreme officers of the fraternity frater-nity that Mr. Quinn was a member of the Knights of Pythias, which is under the ban of the Church. Mr. Quinn handed his resignation last night to Grand Knight John F. Callahan of Hartford Council. He says: "Some time ago I was officially informed in-formed that charges had been preferred pre-ferred against me. It was alleged that I had become a member of the Knights of Pythias and consequently was: tintf' to remain a member of the Knights of Columbus. The author of these charges was Rev. Walter J. STmnby of this city. A little later I was offi- . . cialJy informed that I had been suspended sus-pended by the Supreme Knight of ih- order for failure to pay my dues in strict compliance with the rule of the order. The member of the national body from Hartford informed me tha' the charges aforesaid were the real reason for my suspension, and that t'he question of dues was only a 'surface' 'sur-face' reason. I "Within a few days I have been :n-fornied :n-fornied that charges will be preferred against the grand knight and secretary secre-tary of this council if I am continued on the rolls Of Hartford Council, and further, if Hartford Council insists on keeping me in good standing, the charter char-ter of Hartford Council will be revoked." re-voked." - Mr. Quinn says he is unwilling to involve the council, and consequently withdraws, although he has property Interests at stake in the insurance fund of the order, and he protests against being "railroaded out of the order by snap judgment." because he joined the Knights of Pythias. This act of Mr. Quinn's is practically a self-excommunication. He is a brother of Rev. John J. Quinn-, a well-known well-known priest of this diocese, now of Taftville. Father Stanley wa.s out of town today, but Bishop Tierney said ., that, while he knew nothing of the case of Mr. Quinn, no Roman Catholic could remain a member of a secret order or-der under the ban of the Church, an 1 at, the same time remain a member of - the Church. |
